Public opinion pages
I'm not sure what you call them in English, but it's the page or two of the mag where the public sends their rants to for publishing. Usually the ones of quality newspapers are of decent level, but I'm definately starting to feel the summer here too. In fact, it's really getting on my nerves. There's three papers I've been reading, the local large newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, a freebie paper on my way to work in the train, and a tabloid at some point when I'm overly bored.
So there's this woman, who was on a gik of a Finnish Idols -winner. The winner being male, it should be obvious that most of the fans are girls mostly lacking pubic hair or on very slim growth of such (at this point Dead_Meat will fetch the towel). Anyways, this woman was on a gik with her 15-y-o daughter, and evidently got badly insulted by the singer taking off his shirt and performing "erotic dancing". Apparently, she's very concerned about the effect such will have on early teenage girls mainly populating the events where this person performs.
She has decided to post this rant to all three so far.
There's the other woman, who is self-statingly "going through a stage or maybe something permanent" as "literature written by men no longer gives her anything". So she's insisting on libraries having a section dedicated to literature written by women (a bit like science fiction, short stories, encyclopaedias), which in my opinion would practically mean splitting the library into wing "written by women" and wing "written by men". Whatever benefits this would reap is unknown to me, but so far this has hit two of the papers mentioned.
I mean, I understand if you want to write a rant. In fact, there's lots of good debate going on there sometimes, admittedly mainly on Helsingin Sanomat (the two others have way too low levels in what comes to quality, so they're frankly just shit; alarmingly, the first one has become shit now too). Why on earth do you have to mail it to each medium possible? I mean, what. [/rant off].

Re: Public opinion pages
Well these people are writing about shit topics for shit reasons. It therefore follows they will do what all shit people do and create as much fuss about said shit topic as possible in order to convince themselves their topic of choice is not shit 'Why else would I send it to all these papers?'.
Shit people do shit things non-shocker!

Re: Public opinion pages
1) we had letters like that when elvis first performed. We grew out of them
2) We have sections for 'femminist literature' but we don't bisect the whole library.

Re: Public opinion pages
I believe the term you'd be looking for is "letters to the editor"

Re: Public opinion pages
You should stop reading that crap. Other people's opinions are overall shit when not asking for an opinion.

The bottom-left of the letters in the guardian, and bottom-right in the times are often fairly amusing.

Re: Public opinion pages
Atleast your letters to the editors aren't filled with letters from right wing activists :s

Re: Public opinion pages
What's that, a different sort of an idiot than our idiots?
Are your right-wing activists copypasting their mails to all available newspapers? To be honest, I blame internet of this idiocy. It's just too easy to send an email with your rant on it to each local magazine. It should be made harder.

In fact I did refer to him. Has to do with a piece of their dogma, something along the lines that one should deter himself from expressing his opinion unless someone explicitly asks for it. Which again has to do with missionaries and conversion.

You mean like forcing them to use typewriters and carbon paper?
But I'm heartily amused by the idea of someone using the internet to spam the dead tree media.
