Superstitions
Does anyone here have any superstitions? I was just watching a show about it and was wondering about the people here.
A number of people were offered room 1313 on the 13th floor. A number of people accepted them, even though it had a cracked mirror. I would have taken the room, even if my holiday was on Friday 13th. Would you?

Re: Superstitions
I would happily take Room 13 if it was available and offered to me. However, you would actually be surprised at how many hotels and buildings there are that do not actually have a toom 13, or sometimes even a floor 13. Well, it'll be the 13th floor, they'll just call it the 14th.
I do always notice Friday the 13th, but more as a familiar date than with any foreboding of disaster.

I am actually not sure. I have encountered a building before which did not have a 13th floor, although I can't for the life of me recall what building it was. I just remember it because the elevator panel seeming to miss a button highly confused me until I realised that they left the entire floor out because of the number 13.
My university building has 15 floors, including a floor 13. Accordingly, there is a room 13A-13.

I managed to convince my superstitious grandma that it is bad luck to use scissors on wednesdays. She has been a keen dressmaker for many years.
The look on her face was priceless.

Re: Superstitions
in my university building there isn't a lecture theatre 13...
As far as superstitions go, I don't really care
but I fell into the habit of walking over 2 drains and avoiding 3 drains no idea why.
Oh and the "see a shooting star, make a wish"
I do think it's funny that people have superstitions even though they blatently don't work. I'm generally happy so whatever i'm doing can't be that bad.

Re: Superstitions
Surely everyone knows why people are superstitious of Friday the 13th?
Just before the Crusades, a band of Church Knights (the Templar Knights) were formed under slightly suspicious circumstances. They fought all through the Crusades, and while they eventually got their ass kicked, they became *the* major power in Europe afterwards. They had castles everywhere, huge amounts of money (anyone joining immediately donated all their wealth, and lots of people donated money / land for favour).
They started getting a bit arrogant, and basically ended up pissing off the French King. The Pope was pretty new, and didn't have much of a backbone, and the French king started bitching about all these people that he didn't like, and how they were all anti Christian and worshipped something else.
In short, in a MASSIVE conspiracy, on Friday 13th 1307, most of them were killed.
There's more information on why some feel Friday 13th unlucky at this random website:
http://www.rosslyntemplars.org.uk/friday,_13th.htm
(I found it while checking out the date ^^).
The most supersitious I get is not turning my screen on and checking IRC etc after getting out of bed. I do believe in other people's supersititions, and how it affects them (and the world around them) though.

You shouldn't be scared about walking under ladders. Generally the worst thing that can happen is if you walk into them heh

Re: Superstitions
I wouldn't have a problem taking the room and generally don't follow any superstitions. One I can think of that I would though if I was ever in a position to do it would be to touch the "Welcome to Anfield" sign if I was a Liverpool player.

I don't believe in superstitions.
So I would.
I only believe in dreams.

Then the kids at school would be happy to have a substitute teacher instead of a Mr Rattle.
Sorry, bad joke.

But they can be true and sometimes it tells the future. Like Liverpool being in the Champion's League final.

That depends if you're talking about dreams which turn out to be true in some form, or deja vu.
But yes I hope Liverpool win and get to play again next year.

Re: Superstitions
I always wear my Derby shirt when doing exams.
I never walk over three drains.
Obviously I know these make no differece, but if I didn't wear my Derby shirt I'd probably be thinking 'shit I'm going to do crap', subconciously changing the way I the way I think. Same with the drains - if I walk over it, I'll be expecting something to happen, or if a normal thing happened that seemed a bit unlucky I'd attribute it to that.

Re: Superstitions
Im very supersticious for several reasons.
It started at a young age, a few rules me and my mates would follow, just to ensure we were as lucky as possible I still do it now. A few of them ill list now
1-Dont walk under ladders, scaffolding or signs
2-Black cat walks in front of you spit 3 times
3-Dont walk over drains
4-Salt falls, throw it over your shoulder
5-Wear my villa shirt to my exam
These are just a few examples, a bit weird, but these little rules make me feel slightly more secure.

I thought the Templar Knights died in Malta, not under some big suspicious circumstances?
Not that I know much about it, but I remember that from somewhere

That's because only the French took it seriously.
The English went "ha listen to the French? get real". Lots of them ended up in Scotland, some in Spain, Malta, all over the place really (anywhere they were that didn't take the Pope and / or France seriously)
