the ****? i averaged 130fps at top specs when i was playing (ath64 3400+, 9800 pro).
also, if there's been one game in history that's totally luck-dependent it's planetside. it's an FPS with horrible, HORRIBLE newbie-hate built into the certs, and wildly unbalanced forces. it's a nice game but it's not about skill AT ALL until you get near the top of the pile.

Re: World of Warcraft
As far as the pvp system is going, I know a hunter who scored 700 kills in one day, he got 1900 contribution points.
I know a warrior who scored 152 kills in one day, he got 2300 contribution points.
The difference?
The hunter got all his at Hillsbrad, the Warrior got his out in high level zones mainly 1v1 or even against the odds.
As for it being hit and miss on yank servers, I blame that partially at the moment on too many servers being still ridiculously high pop, Mannoroth before the pvp patch still couldn't handle an Azuregos raid during peak hours, the GM eventually had to despawn the beast so the server would stay up.
As it stands pvp on the busier servers is very much, who makes the first move and get's the run of the lag (i.e. lack of) as it's thoroughly entertaining to have a Slideshow of a 37 man zerg come and wipe out your 35 person zerg unable to do anything cause the servers will only respond to the first x amount of users to make more concerted moves and hence gain priority with regards to latentcy.
Hastily implemented (prolly ahead of the fact that the 6 month expiry date on them subscriptions are up soon) without any solution yet demonstrated to handling massive population concurrency in zones.
I've currently moved to the lowest pop server on the yank servers where everything is royally enjoyable and you feel more compelled to assist your fellow man now when there is some dirty pvp'ing going on. Certainly not unplayable for anyone of any level with regards to the ruleset, just unplayable for those who co-habit a server that cannot support the server population and density.
Evergreen.

Darkshire just got attacked by a huge group of horde... I hid behind the inn and hoped no one would see me.
It worked.
This game is great. I'm hooked already.

Re: World of Warcraft
Well, I solo more then I should. I am playing with 2 RL friends but somehow I can't be arsed to team up.
To be honest, I think WoW is a tad overrated, it's just another mmorpg, a well polished one that is. The biggest lack I feel in this game is a living, dynamic community due (imo) to the large amount of different servers and a lack of communication lines between the areas within those servers.

exactly bang on the money. the servers are all a little too small for tons of proper guilds, so you end up either in Big'n'Faceless or Small'n'Pointless. Other MMO games (Planetside, Earth and Beyond, and from what i've heard, EVE are good at this) have hundreds and hundreds of guilds that are big and active enough for raids or ops or what have you regularly AS WELL AS letting you know everyone currently online. I'm sure WoW does have such things, it's just not structured in a manner conducive to them. And for those without nice-sized guilds, it suffers as a result.

if you ever played neocron, for the first 15 levels (talking a week or so of play) you had to kill rats of increasing size for hours on end.
starting by punching them...
god that got really frustratings.
nothing else can beat it's rat killing saga.

Re: World of Warcraft
I must admit, I wasnt a huge fan of WoW during the levelling phase, but once you hit 60 things do pick up.
Ok you'll spend a lot of your time farming instances, loot whoring, and now beating on people in PvP, but its the best endgame of any MMORPG I've played so far. And with the upcoming Blackwing Lair, Battlegrounds, Hero Classes, there is so much more depth to be added to this game that I can see i'll be playing it for a long time.

Shadowbane is indeed a very good game. Problem is the mechanics put a lot of people off.
First of all is the PvP. You can basically kill anyone of any level, no matter how much lower level they are than you, without any penalty whatsoever. While I personally think this is one of the great strengths of the game it pisses a lot of people off cos they feel they are being ganked on. I guess the people who play games like Everquest (which is hugely popular) don't like this free for all attitude.
Another "problem" is the Guild vs Guild warfare. A Guild more powerful than their opposing Guild can basically crush towns that took weeks to build up. In the early months of the game a lot of Guilds were destroyed in this way which led to a mass exodus from the game; it hasn't really recovered since.
While I think Shadowbane is easily one of the better MMORPGs out there it doesn't really appeal to the majority of gamers who I guess just want to spend their time killing rats all day :/

gank: To attack without provocation, to lash out for no good reason.
Example: Jeez, I barely set foot in the place when Chris ganked me. I wuzn't gonna boost nothin' this time.

OK, but dictionary.com doesn't agree. Has this word been made up by the WoW community or is this a common game term?

Actually, ganking is more like the act of attacking someone who has no chance to defend him- or herself, because you are either with a group, of substantially higher level, or because the other person is fighting some random monsters and low on health.
But in WoW, it seems to be used any time someone kills you, whatever the circumstances.

Eve online - Gang killing, forming a gang with intention of killing lone players/very small groups of miners or alternatively joining someones gang (temporary team) with the intention of killing them.
Probably not the original usage but its the first time i ever heard it used as a regular phrase

Re: World of Warcraft
I play in EU bloodscalp, and I got lvl 46 rogue. I also made a new hunter to vashj, who is now lvl 11 or 12.
IMO, ganking means that if somebody is much bigger lvl from u that he won't even get honor for killing u (lvl ??). Or that if somebody is grinding and has lost pretty much hp, and then someone comes and kills him/her as he/she has no chance at all.

And my level 37 Rogue has just entered STV. So far, I've been ganked in the middle of Grom'Gol twice by a Priest throwing around spells from the Zeppelin Tower, and a rogue doing the gank-vanish thing to avoid the guards. Outside, things are so far a bit safer, but I do not carry the best memories from my first character's trip through STV.

P3 800, 936mb ram and TI 4200 64 mb videocard. Pretty mediocre, but works fine for me. Never been involved in mass pvp action though.

AMD Athlon XP1800+

The most important thing for WoW is the memory. You will definitely want to have 1024Mb of memory, as having 512 makes the game playable until you encounter large amounts of players together, which in cities such as Ironforge and Ogrimmar can seriously give you several minutes of lag while the game is frantically loading in player profiles, equipment models and textures et cetera. The graphics card and CPU are less important; I can pretty much play it fine with nearly all the settings to maximum.

Re: World of Warcraft
duron 950 with 256 RAM and a radeon 9200SE graphics card
i dont get that much slowdown except in the cities either, so PVP is still ok ::
EDIT: went into STV at lvl 32, now 34, generally facing 2 to 1 or above odds anywhere in STV, although if its warriors or paladins i generally kick their asses
(i love being a shaman hehehe)

On the horde side.
Lesh: I think I've come around to your pov regarding the sword of omen, the difference between my existing MH and it was actually quite small in the end, and the faster poison application will be invaluable. Plus it looks much better than the green mace I had.
Do you know a good weapon swap addon, by the way?
[edit]
I did from 31-33 in STV (on the start of the HN chains, and killing lots of lower level trolls), which I only managed because I had my main logged out some 10 yards away from where I'd be questing. Being a rogue helped too, of course.
Now I'm back in TM, doing quests in Alterac, and it's going ok. Not really been ganked, because it's out of the SS->AV alliance travel paths.

Well, for Sinister Strike spamming the Sword of Omen is obviously inferior to slower weapons of it's own level even if they have somewhat lower dps, it's just that at the moment it's dps is so far beyond what I already had, that it's a way better choice. Once I get a better main-hand, I'll be moving it to the off-hand.

Do you know a good weapon swap addon, by the way?

I'd personally suggest WeaponQuickSwap, which is great.

I agree absolutely. Add in that I need mount money, and having a sword main hand/dagger off hand (swapped for ambushes, etc) makes much more sense than mace/sword.

Re: World of Warcraft
Even at level 60, I generally open with ambush, and then switch to sword for SS spamming. While this is pretty efficient for solo PvE, you do lose a lot in pure damage when it comes to PvP or raid content. If you're talking end game, people in my guild with Perditions/Gutgore Ripper are significantly more deadly in PvP, and also have a much high damage output in raids than a top sword rogue like myself.

Depends on the target you're fighting, really.
If it's a relatively easy mob, you can do Ambush and go for the quick kill, on tougher targets and other players I'd rather do the Cheap Shot stunlock thing. Just worked on a level 42 Hunter that first tried to kill my 37 Rogue, then after I vanished and he couldn't find me, started fighting a level 38 elite mob in the area. Silly, silly, silly. I don't think he actually ever got out of stunlock :P

Stunlock is becoming progressively harder now though, obviously it doesnt work at all against mages. Priests and warlocks simply have too much HP to be able to stunlock and kill them effectively, where as if you get a bit of luck with your crits you can drop an 1800+ ambush on them, crit sinister strike and then a cold blood eviscerate for the win.
Paladins, shamen and hunters generally have a bit too much for the alpha to work so you'd have to try stunlock on them, shamen and hunters tend to drop pretty easy IF you get the jump on them, Paladins in my case is only duels so you cant really get them jump on them.
And well, druids and warriors, save yourself some time and dont ****ing bother, druids are about the most invincible end game class, a rogue cannot beat a good druid unless they have the luck of the ****ing gods on their side, heh. I've noticed a shift now in the end game where warriors are somewhat more vulnerable to rogues, but things are still pretty much in the warriors favour. The onyl rogue I've ever seen completely juggle warrirors was in a full set of Nightslayer and had a dragonfang blade too.

But, on the other hand, they have such pathetic dps that they can't beat you either.
