Watch out for the "jpg" virus thing
It's best not to click any links in IRC that have jpg on the end - a particuarly nasty virus going around that nothing seems to pick up.

Re: Watch out for the "jpg" virus thing
Btw if you do get it, the only way around it so far is to reinstall windows - it corrupts many system files and kills the registry.

Re: Watch out for the "jpg" virus thing
I got hit by this one last week when some of my SS alliance's HC was pasting it around without knowing what it was. Exploits some javascript flaw, might just work on IE but it gets past firewalls and AV apparently.
I had to reformat, lost pretty much everything.

A .jpeg file itself simply cannot contain a virus, as there is no code in it being executed.
If your computer died after opening a .jpg file, then either you were redirected to a malicious script (probably ActiveX) which buggered up your computer, or you already had a virus which was triggered by opening that .jpg file.

Wasn't there a galaxy in a round of planetarion that had something embedded in their galaxy pic that tracked people who viewed it?

That was done via the hosting server, not anything to do with the picture itself (afaik).

The file extension at the server end doesn't necessarily reflect the data you'd be receiving. You could feasibly have your web server send HTML data instead for instance. Javascript worms ahoy that way.

They just checked the IP's in the server logs of those who viewed it...

Seeing as Opera generally doesn't react to ActiveX exploits, I wouldn't be too worried. Even then, it's an ActiveX exploit that you could use any file for. The fact that it's activated by linking to a .jpg doesn't suddenly make it a .jpg virus.

Re: Watch out for the "jpg" virus thing
ummph what kinda information would you like to know?
All I know is after scaning my PC for viruses ( which weren't found (or at least that what "they" were told me)) my PC went tits up. I mean, everything seems to be working "fine" but I can't connect to the Internet. Every single time I open browser I get "this page cannot be displayed".
Oh yeah, I already reinstalled Windows, I turned on and off cable router, I switched cables with another PCs and it still doesnt work.

heh, there is no problem whatsoever hiding a exe file (or other) in a picture file.
I done it manytimes before, and it works like a charm.
Example: i wanted to scare the shit out of a friend of mine, so i wrapped a picture of a naked girl around a little script that was a trojan. When he recived the file, he loaded it and saw it as a normal picture, but at the same time he opened it, i got a icq message telling me his ip and other assorted information.
He called me all freaked out 20 minutes later when his mouse started moving all over, his keyboard was typing, programs opening and shutting etc, after a while i told him what i did, then i told him how to get the nasty thing off his computer.
Its a simple simple thing aslong as you know what your doing, so what you are saying you dutch midget is untrue

There is no way to "hide an exe in a jpg file". Hide binary code, sure, that MIGHT be executed, if opened in specific program X, with bug Y.
You're probably a script kiddie thinking he's clever for renaming dropper.exe to britney.jpg.exe

no, you can hide a exe in a jpg file, and no im not a script kiddy, and im prolly older then most people here
It has nothing to do with renaming a file, it has to do with editing code. Everything is about code.
Its not that hard to spot though, if a jpg picture is a small small picture of a girl, and its 2-300kb big, then there´s something dodgy..

Bet you can't name a programming language I can't code with less than 10 tries.
I say you have no idea what you are talking about, and are trying to appear mysterious and knowledgeable by making shit up.

Re: Watch out for the "jpg" virus thing
why would i want to make something that messes with your computer?
Most computers nowdays wont be affected due to the fact people are carefull with what they do, they also got virus scanners, firewalls with high security, and they aint running windows 95 like we used to have fun with
Im quite sure your quite good with coding, asfar as i know, your one of the resident nerds of this forums, i myself im not very good with hardcoding, bar from some knowlage in vb.net/wb/java & c++ i had to do for my old job a few years when iwas workingas a networks administrator (and times were slow)

Even then, you'd need for the recipient to open it in a program specifically vulnerable to a buffer overflow, so it's still not a surefire way.

Oh it's far from surefire, in fact I can't think of a reasonable application at all. But your statement that there is no code to be executed in a jpg file isn't completely accurate, and that's what I corrected. Buffer overflows is just the most well known way of getting data to run as code.

my computer still without internet connection.
ISP - fixers people already went home.

I still have no idea what that virus called and if I had it in the first place.
I thought I would inform you, since all of you were so curious.

Fair enough.
I know that it is possible to run data as code by using a buffer overflow vulnerability, for example in email headers. But that's works because a certain part contain more data than the program can handle, resulting in the remaining data to be tossed in with the program code, and being executed.
With image files, text files and such pure data files not having a maximal size, it would seem unlikely that a program would be vulnerable to a buffer overflow in this regard, but I could be wrong.

Well, they have a maximal size dictated by the hard drive format, but this is obviously not what you meant.
