You know the answer already. No country in the history of the world has ever started a war in a situation where they do not stand to gain anything.

As opposed to who? China?
Just because you don't agree with some policy doesn't make it wrong.

On the scale of 1-10, Congo's "may cause trouble elsewhere and/or destabilize the region" rating is -3.6

Oh please don't encourage the government. And don't forget to mention the many other countries that also have the same problems, sometimes because the US helped put an anti-communist dictator in power. We could go on forever.

Is this true? Or is it "May cause trouble in a region which we give a **** about"?. African conflicts/crisis tend to spill over to neighbouring countries (refugees, ethnic tensions, economic destabalisation, etc).

I think it caused some trouble for all the people there who got massacred, and as you say, all the people in the surrounding areas who will get dragged into it. I am no expert on Africa at all, but I get the impression that many people are tied more to tribal loyalties than national ones. I am not saying that is a bad thing, but it makes trouble more likely to spread.

Africa is irrelevant. It has no oil, and nothing of great value. Plus congo has forests. It's hard to fight in there

If Africa has no oil, what the hell is Shell doing in Nigeria?
i.e. Africa does have Oil, and Nigeria is the 10th largest Oil producer in the world (w/ reserves of 22bn barrells). Sure, this is no Middle East, but still.

Since the "poor countries" constitute the majority of the world, this is hardly surprising.
Also, I would hardly say the United States or Canada are resource poor. Even Europe still has sizable coal and oil deposits despite being resource whores the last couple of centuries.

it was a pointless point of mine as the answer is quite clear anyway. ther reason the wast is so powerful is down to the industrial revolution and imperialism. If we had been nicer to them, the poor countries probably wouldn't be all that poor.

apparently the theory went that if there were two immensely powerful nations, then they would never have a war. There was one problem with this theory: It was Bollocks*

If Africa wanted help from the west they shouldn't have told us to get lost. It's their own fault for not wanting to stick with Britain. They could have had schools, hospitals, and a Queen. Instead they decided to go it alone.

I once read an obscure article that said that there actually were schools and hospitals in Africa. I dismissed it as communist propaganda though.

I read an article that claimed there was such a place as Africa. I dismissed as subjective existentialism run amok however. On a secondary note I damn well hope there aren't any publicly funded hospitals in Africa. Last thing we need is more socialist propaganda about people "getting better" and "not being sick".
