As there isn't an attached file (I assume the uni IMAP server scanned and stripped it) I'm denied the interest of finding out what it actually was. The email itself is clean.

Anyone else come across this one?

no, although the other day i got (slammer?) with a subject 'WinXP Patch' , which despite the fact it wouldnt fit in email, im not even running XP.

Apart from all that of course it stuck out like a sore thumb as being a virus.

ps. i reccommend Mailwasher 2.0, as it can send fake Delivery Failed messages back to the recipients, as well as adding them to spam blacklists (great for dealing with spam etc).

mailwashers bounces are pointless as spammers will always forge return addresses.

it wouldnt have been slammer as spreads purly through the sql server

Yes, the other day. No attachment for me either so I was mystified, no virus report from the firewall either so nothing was stripped out (not sure if my current firewall is that efficient anyway heh) but Symantec says it was this little beastie.

Wonder where my attachment went...

On a related spam note I got several hundred bounced emails the other week, a look at the returned headers shows some bastard spammer spoofed my freeserve subdomain as originator

My uni just sent out a campus wide alert about it.

If you ask me they're over-dramatising it:
"This virus is potentially very infectious to users on the Hall Network.
We are already receiving complaints that P.C.s on the Hall Network are attempting to infect other P.C.s around the world. Any further complaints will result in the infected P.C. being disconnected from the network. You must ensure that your P.C. is not infected and is running an up to date virus scanner in order to prevent your P.C. being infected."

Fs, firstly it's just a mass mailer with no damage to the infected machine; secondly it deactivates soon anyway; thirdly, how hard would it be to block all outgoing email from [email protected] until the deactivation date?; finally, they offer a free virus scanner so why not make it compulsary to have one installed

Looks to me like someone can't be arsed to administrate the network properly so is going to try blaming a few innocent users instead.

If you knew a thing or two about SMTP, you'd realize this isn't as easy as it sounds.


Besides, I don't see what the fuzz is all about. The bandwidth taken up by viruses is a percent of a percent of what spam takes up.
