Re: The board game RISK is far better then any RTS war game...
RISK is extremely limited in scope and tactics. It all gets a bit monotonous. Comparing it with RTS games is a bit silly, too, given its turn based nature.
Civ 2 > RISK.

A guardian/mutalisk/scourge/queen attack (or similar) can get quite complicated, although it must be said that you're strawmanning horribly.
'Hey, RISK's a ****ing easy game! All you have to do is get Australia and hold Siam with 30 units '

You can have hotseat games of Civ you know, and given that you can WOW! copy the game, I don't really get your point.
The above point is doubly true because I got my MP edition of Civ 2 from Kazaa, as did most people.

Re: The board game RISK is far better then any RTS war game...
I like Risk. I don't play it anymore because I don't have that kind of pointless social free-time.
Risk is not "easy" unless you are playing against idiots. The actual game tactics are pretty simplistic (compared to something like Diplomacy) but the human-interaction can make the game as deep or shallow as you wish. I've had a Risk game go on for in excess of twelve hours for instance. Quite a few people had "30 units in Siam while holding Australia" and guess what, they didn't win.
The main criticism of Risk is that it's too luck based. An excellently strategy can come undone because some random git get's 6's fifty times in a row or something. This is why Diplomacy is superior in general (but I like Risk too as I say).
Power is OK, although it's a poor imitation of Diplomacy.
I don't think you can make valid comparisons to RTS games. In RTS there isn't much diplomatic play, it's mainly about economic management and micro-battle tactics. A good game of Risk can be like Poker (which is another deceivingly "simple" game).

Quite a few people rush with Zerg and don't win. It was a parody of his stupid irrelevent comment, hence the inverted commas.

rushing with zerg doesnt work if the opponent is just as good or the maps really small... unless they trying some funky build order.

I much prefer protoss rushing, but longer games are more funky.

civ3 >> civ2
but moo2 >> civ*
i maintain a history of loosing 9 out of 10 games of risk. the game is ok and nice and it's all true what the "profi risk players" said, but i find it too boring to play a game of 3 hours just to loose.
also, it's too dice based, that's true.
i hate the treaty stuff..
do you know there is a SC funmap called risk? its quite good actually. you should try it.
zerg rushing was made more and more difficult with each patch.

Re: The board game RISK is far better then any RTS war game...
I started playing Risk again a few years ago with my son and his friends. The game itself is simplier than I remembered it; but it's all about politics anyway.

Neither do I. There's just the fine art of getting your allies to attack you right when you're ready to take them on.

The golden rule of treaties is to be specific. If it's the game I'm thinking of I said I wouldn't attack you in North Africa (I think) but then someone else (Matt probably) did so, so I could attack via him into Congo (or somesuch) which wasn't part of our agreement.
As always, check the fine print.

I don't think anyone considers poker to be a simple game. Or if they do they're an absolute moron.
Risk is all about how everyone else plays anyways. Set strategies are never the greatest idea.
