The way I see it, there is nothing wrong whatsoever in playing with distorters, and particularly not so in covoping/sking other scanners.
When it comes to playing with dists, I don't think people appreciate how much research you lose out on, and how slowly you are able to build ships. You can't stockpile, because you will not be able to spend resources. You can continuously spend resources to keep a production line forever and ever, but this is error-prone (I certainly ****ed it up last round) and boring.
On the other hand, the way we played last round was great for me, personally. I was able to play value, get a decent score, study for exams... In general I spent a lot less time online than I'd usually do. This is because I didn't get incomings, and I didn't send defense (Neither did I get any though). I mean, there were like 4 nights last round I had incomings, and only two of those were significant (Lost 500 and ~2k roids, respectively). I was online to claim targets, send attacks, and enqueue distorters. That was all that PA demanded from me.
What made last round work so well was that the four of us (mz, Benneh, JBG) followed a pretty general plan, and it worked. Plans that work are a lot more fun than plans that don't work, but the potential was always there and anyone could have done what we did. The fact that it was shown to work last round meant that it could be tried on a larger scale this round, and it seems that a lot of people in Ascendancy have done so, which is probably a good thing for them. It's important to realise though, that these people are not unscannable. I'm terran dictatorship, and even if I were not in the same tag, I could have scanned them. If an alliance can not get scans on them, it is because a) their scanners are shit b) they selected a setup that left them vulnerable to covert ops(see a) c) they can't defend against structure killers on their scanners. One could easily forgive c) if one didn't realise how small planets need to be to hit a scanner.
Whining about covert operations and structure kills is just weird. It has been a part of the game for as long as I have played PAX, and I do mean really a part of the game (Something people actually do!!), not just something that was possible. It's just another weapon to use, just another way to get an edge.
It'd be pretty hilarious if the game mechanics were changed over this, but not entirely unexpected. One has to wonder why no one else thinks of these things, though.
Oh, and one point that isn't made nearly often enough:

It's actually possible to really have good fun in PA, you just have to make it yourself!
