Insects
I dont mind insects but there is one thing i find weird about them. When you leave your window open, its dark outside and you have a light on loads of the little bugs fly towards the light. Does this mean that during the day they fly towards the sun? I understand alot of insects are nocturnal but if they fly towards the light surely it would make more sense to not be nocturnal.
Im sure google could tell me the answer but i wouldnt know how to word the search.
Any ideas anyone?

Re: Insects
The light of the sun is lighting up everywhere and you don't need to move closer to the sun (the source) to have it bright, while a tiny candle in the night has a discernible source. and a small, bright area.
Atleast that seems a bit logic to me.

Re: Insects
I'm inclined to agree with Nantoz.
There's actually no definitive known reason why they fly towards light at all. One of the more popular theories is that insects use the moon as a form of navigation, so when they see a brightly lit object they confuse it for the moon.
It stands to reason then that an insects vision is too poor to dinstinguish the sun from everything else in fullbright conditions. It's also been suggested that they do attempt to fly towards the sun sometimes, but then other primal insticts such as the desire for food dvierts them back towards the ground.

Re: Insects
they try and fly towards the moon aquarding to something i saw on animal planet, and they're not exactly what one would call smart, so they get confused and think that your light is the moon.

NOBODY expects the 1-X Inquisition! His chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... his two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless sarcams....his *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless sarcams...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Oxford English Dictionary... His *four*...no... *Amongst* his weapons.... Amongst his weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... He'll come in again.

Re: Insects
<3 monty python. It's the answer to all problems, including how to find the Holy Grail (invade France), and apparently why bugs fly towards the light.
Maybe it's because the light source gives off heat, and they're cold at night?
They are extremely irritating though. Leaving a light on by an open window at night (especially with it right by a pale wall) generally means you end up with lots of dead bugs appearing the next day. What I want to know is howcome you don't see dead things outside like you do inside?!?
And, unless anyone's been a bug, generally all they can do is guess at why bugs fly towards the light

If this is the case, and we have those glowing insect trap things to capture them, surely that's (if your suggestion is correct) leaving sexy blow up dolls around that, when you try and have sex with them, explode.
I feel quite mean . Not mean enough to give away my "insectinator" tennis racket though; it has metal "strings" with current passing through them to stun/ kill small flying insects. It's quite fun, really.

Re: Insects
Why are they all daddy long legs? surely that means they have issues. (cue not funny joke about little girl squashing two of them when she finds they're both daddy long legs and there aren't any mummy long legs)

Re: Insects
i bet there's a lot of things involved, but the most obvious is navigation.
if you actually have the bug in the same room as the light, he'll fly in wacky circles around it, often slowly closing in. now if i'm a bug in the middle of the day, to fly in a straight line with crappy vision, i just try to keep that big bright object on my right (or left) in one direction and i should get somewhere.
other stuff i'm sure goes on too. some bugs are attracted to colors, and there's likely a lot more color in the light than in the dark, etc.
i like to leave my windows open with the lights on at night and play with the vacuum tho.

Yes. Mods can see who reps them. This includes, say, Zhukov pretending to be Dace because he is a mongchop.

Re: Insects
They do that because its dangerous to walk in the dark at night..
Maybe some evil man pulls them in the bushes and rapes them if they do it anyway!!

Please don't be so condescending, it is difficult being trapped down this dark and lonely well with only the internet for company.

Re: Insects
I know that bees navigate by the sun, thats why they sometimes get lost if they don`t get back to the hive before sun down. I think the moon plays a role in some insect mating strategies; similarly to that in some crab species.

yes, I think they come in through other places (well obviously they do, but we have an old house with holes in the floorboards and there's obviously holes somewhere in the wall because you can feel the wind on a breezy day ). Maybe they're trying to invade your house, but find when they're in there it's not worth invading and they die trying to escape?

There are people living in huts in the congo with better insulation than you have.

Re: Insects
I meant holes in the wall near the floorboards, because unless something is on the (cheap old) carpet, it can rise up to 1 foot in the air when the wind is blowing in the "right" direction
