He's at his best playing up front with a proven striker such as Henry or Van Persie - their presence means that there's more space for him to get the ball and run at defenders. 4-5-1 will never be his forte, but then again - name a striker for who it is. Playing up front with Baptista is 4-4-1, by the way.
As for being "top of the league goalscorer class", he's only 22 - I'd give him a bit of time to develop personally. His disallowed goal against Spurs was a great finish.
