6th, 7th and 8th race ?
if the Eitraides (terran open to trading technologies) is a success, could we see the equivalent new races derived from Xan, Cath and Zik ?

Re: 6th, 7th and 8th race ?
I don't think it's very likely, but I never anticipated the idea of making new races based on the existing ones. Also, this is really a 'question' more than a 'suggestion'. Do you have any more detailed ideas about possible new races?

I still advocate the Master of Orion approach to races.

Oh you missed one of the greatest games ever (for Master of Orion 2 that counts, moo3 was plain shit...) Anyway, here comes a more in-depth explanation, after I totally forgot to post it in that other thread from tuxed0 ( clicky).
Similar to what planetarion already has for race specialisation, Moo2 has several attribute sections (including, but not limited to: productivity, attack modifier, defense modifier, research and "general"). Each attribute has a certain price, for instance +10% productivity would cost 15 attribute points. There are also negative costs which add to a race's available attribute points again, f.e. -10% firepower would grant you 10 additional attribute points. Just on a sidenote, there was also a "lucky" attribute which would mean your race would receive fewer random 'damaging' events and more random 'benefiting' random events - maybe something to ponder about in case that we really get random events at some point.
Now every race starts with the same amount of attribute points, let's say 80 (just as an example, the real values can be totally different) and invests those into certain attributes. Moo2 shipped with pre-defined races but also allowed you to create your own.
Now why am I in favour of such a system? Quite simple, it improves your personal identification with a race: If you do not like any of the existing ones you could always create your own.
It also widens up the area in which races can have a bonus or malus.
And last but not least, it should not be that hard to implement as PA's current system already goes into that direction.

Re: 6th, 7th and 8th race ?
It'd need careful implementation, but I'm certainly in favour of its consideration.

Sounds like absolute murder to make stats for.

Indeed. I very much agree that making stats for that in the current way is very diffcult. I even had a solution for that yesterday before I went out, but I lost it between all those alcoholica last night.

Re: 6th, 7th and 8th race ?
Sorry for the double post, but here comes what I had in mind regarding ship stats.
Due to the incredibly large amount of possible races it would be impossible to keep ship stats the way they currently are. Instead of having "Race X has Ships A,B,C" it would be better to define a few ships for stealing, a few cloaked ones, some emp and some normal ones. Now redesign the tech-tree to be a real tree with exclusive decisions, this would be pretty close to what existed during the first rounds with the decision between war and science. This would again increase a player's gaming experience as every player can focus on what he likes most and create even more identification with his planet.

So, what you are saying is that you design a set of ship stats which are effectively "one race" of all the possible ships, and then continuing on from the Master of Orion type theme above, you need to chose an array of (lets say) 10 types of ship that your race can build, 1 of which must be a class of Pod. and/or have a minimum of 1 ship per class or something as well. That would be good, but again it is open to the problem of people choosing the "ideal" fleet - though with only one race that may or may not be as much of a problem.
In general; i like the idea of more customiseable races. I have been for quite some time urging appoco and others to consider more micromanagement issues which would have included systems of governence, economic philosophy, domestic security and so forth, however i expressed myself in such a complex way that no-one actually read it .
good times?

Pretty much correct, yes. But with everyone being able to choose a certain amont of everything, and the possibility to include certain "counter" fleet setups into the stats it should be more then fine. It also decreases predictability as lots of people will have lots of different ideas about what their ideal fleet would be (keep in mind, race bonus comes into play as well!)

Micromanagement would also be cool. Personally I am in favour of a lot of things which distract you from the usually repetitive pa pattern.

I've read UN's micro-management ideas, they're very very good and would be a positive effect on the game.

Re: 6th, 7th and 8th race ?
o/
count my vote for heartless idea...
I was excellent at building races with moo2 (i thought i was) and even deeper in, designing wizards in MoM (Master of Magic)... Or at least i thought i was
one way or another, building a race will ultimatly show skill of someone even more, and allow greater flexibility based on alliance needs.
set of stats is somethign i would have to look at, but u cannot expect someone not to be overpowered... after al, thats the reason for customization. It must not be obvious, as everyone would use that, but other then that, there could be awys to gain an edge over the rest by properly designing your race.
racial specs i suggest:
Military branch:
+- 5% armor
+- 5% firepower
+ 20% defencive armor bonus (while at home)
+ 15% defencive armor bonus while on defence mission
+- 10% armor/power while on attack missions
+- 1-3% ship cost.
+- 1 init (may be way overpowered and needed to be taken out)
~ scan distortion (greater fault margin on unit scans)
~ ubership (grants an ability to build ubership (in pod class, something like 65 ar 65 power mid-high init... sort of a death star.) this ability will cost you MOST of your points.
I am at work so do not have time to develop more groups but i suggest the usualy ones to PA
Finance, Research, some Construction, some Cov- Ops (including access to unique cov-op mabbe >), intell (scans), politics (gives some sort of tangible advantage i am yet to think about).
