[football] Fifa's World Player of the Year
The shortlist is below. Coaches and captains of every national team will vote and the winner will be announced in December.
Main purpose of this thread: who do you think the shortlist of three, and eventually the winner will be?
Name your top 3, ie. winner and 2 runners up, and I'll bump the thread later to show who's won. And just to avoid repetition, no-one is allowed to name the same three in the same order.
Also, feel free to suggest glaring omissions from the list, and deride those who are on it but shouldn't be...
- Adriano (Inter Milan, Brazil)
- Michael Ballack (Bayern Munich, Germany)
- David Beckham (Real Madrid, England)
- Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus, Italy)
- Cafu (AC Milan, Brazil)
- Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, Portugal)
- Deco (FC Barcelona, Portugal),
- Didier Drogba (Chelsea, Ivory Coast)
- Michael Essien (Chelsea, Ghana)
- Samuel Eto'o (FC Barcelona, Cameroon),
- Steven Gerrard (Liverpool, England)
- Thierry Henry (Arsenal, France),
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Juventus, Sweden)
- Kaka (AC Milan, Brazil)
- Frank Lampard (Chelsea, England)
- Paolo Maldini (AC Milan, Italy)
- Pavel Nedved (Juventus, Czech Republic)
- Alessandro Nesta (AC Milan, Italy)
- Jay-Jay Okocha (Bolton, Nigeria)
- Raul Gonzalez (Real Madrid, Spain)
- Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal, Argentina)
- Arjen Robben (Chelsea, Netherlands)
- Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid, Brazil)
- Robinho (Real Madrid, Brazil)
- Ronaldinho (Barcelona, Brazil)
- Ronaldo (Real Madrid, Brazil)
- Wayne Rooney (Manchester United, England)
- Andriy Shevchenko (AC Milan, Ukraine)
- Ruud van Nistelrooy (Manchester United, Netherlands)
- Zidane Zinedine (Real Madrid, France)
guesses so far (your guide to avoiding duplication)

Re: [football] Fifa's World Player of the Year
1. Ronaldinho
2. Adriano
3. Wayne Rooney
There are some ridiculous inclusions there, Drogba being the silliest.
The bias against defenders is criminal. Why not John Terry but you pick Nesta and Maldini? It's just another excuse for a wine party.

Ibrahimovic has been excellent this year, I guess you didn't see much of him outside the european matches.

I know its pretty much the same as 1-X's but that would have been my top 3 anyway only in a different order.

Re: [football] Fifa's World Player of the Year
How is Drogba on that list and Terry isn't? I mean I know FIFA's political and all that but that's just ****ing insane.
Anyways assuming I can't vote for the barcelona attack en masse for world player of the year Ronaldinho, Lampard and Kaka with Gerrard getting an honourable mention.

Re: [football] Fifa's World Player of the Year
I think that list could have been predicted at the beginning of the year before any games were played.
How much does it differ from last year?

Re: [football] Fifa's World Player of the Year
[1] Ronaldinho (Barcelona, Brazil)
[2] Kaka (AC Milan, Brazil)
[3] Arjen Robben (Chelsea, Netherlands)
*edit: i thought this was some kind of prediction for next year. since this is another player of the year award thing for last season, i'll replace Robben by Gerrard and place him on #1, since he won the CL final for Liverpool almost single-handed.

Re: [football] Fifa's World Player of the Year
Where are players like Andrea Pirlo, Gianluca Zambrotta, Claude makele and Lucio. Clearly they should have been on the list.

25 of the 30 are the same. (Essien, Okocha, Riquelme, Robben and Robinho are the new ones)

Maybe Steven Gerrard's stunning determination in the Champions League will win him the honour? Then again, perhaps the consistently excellent contributions of players like Pavel Nedved, Zinédine Zidane, Andriy Shevchenko and Paolo Maldini will influence the decision.

I don't think Robinho displayed anything coming close to the likes of Ronaldhino and Adriano. He even started the new season on the bench at Real Madrid.

you're clearly quite clueless about what he achieved at Santos, before he went to Real.

I could be proved wrong and they pick Kaka or Ronaldo instead though.

Can't say I saw him playing for Santos except for some highlights but then I don't believe he'll be in the top three based on that.

The shortlisted three are
Ronaldinho, Eto'o and Lampard
I'll bump this again when they've been put in order but as a progress report...
No-one named all three, but everyone named at least one (Ronaldinho)
Those with two : Silversmoke, 1-X, Zero, JonnyBGood, Idildurx, Minty, Blastoderm, midge5, Leshy, Torz, Androme and Phang.
Only Isildurx named Eto'o.

Re: [football] Fifa's World Player of the Year
I think Sheva is great. Ibrahimovic just arrived, he had a better first year in the Italian league then Sheva but I am not rating him just on those statistics. Ibrahimovic is more then just a very skilled and effective striker, he's an attacker, someone who literary tears defences apart. He's pretty undefendable I believe when playing in full form.
