Laptop burns!
I have a laptop.
It is an Acer 1620.
I use it a lot.
Sometimes, it gets really hot and then turns off. This apparantly should not happen.
The vents seem to be clear and free of dust, and it is used on top of my desk.
It turns of usually when I'm playing a game, it won't let me play Football Manager for more than 5mins now, and Brothers in Arms stops at the same place every time.
Anyone had experience of this or can offer me _helpful_ advice?

Re: Laptop burns!
playing games on a laptop isn't good, they get hot anyway and using processor intensive applications for a long time is a very silly idea as you are asking for overheat problems
(i await this advice biting me in the ass as i play WOW mostly on the laptop i am currently on )

Re: Laptop burns!
Send it back to the manufacturer.
Alternatively, just don't use your laptop!

Re: Laptop burns!
Have a bigger heatsink fitted and better fans.
My Compaq runs CM0304 for days on end before running out of memory. It never overheats though.

Yes , a fan of FM , but i have a stonking great 3.06ghz P4 with 1 gig DDR to play it on, and dont require to use my laptop, hence why i play CM0304 on it.
Your local computer store should do it for you. As much as it pains me to say it, to those with no computer hardware knowledge, go into PC world and pay the relevant Arm and Leg to get it done for you.
If youre playing FM05 , the important thing is more memory though, as its an absoloute memory whore. Get yourself up to 1 gig ASAP.

Re: Laptop burns!
And of course , the obvious advice.
Do not have any porn on there that can be construed as "less than legal" ,as clearly youll end up with a visit from Office Bob and friends afterwards.

Laptops don't get hot, in comparison to desktop PC's. They just have less area to lose heat from. They run much cooler, unless you're running a desktop chip in them. I can run what I like on my Acer laptop for however long I like, and not get anything more than warm legs out of the deal, heat wise.

It's a laptop. Fitting a "bigger heatsink" won't be possible. Fitting more RAM, by and large, may not be possible.
If this is a new problem, there may well be some problem with an internal fan; for example, on my old PC, I was absolutely mystified as to why it kept on shutting down despite a perfectly reasonable processor temperature, until I found out that the northbridge fan just wasn't working.
Have you checked the running temperature of the processor, by the way?

Re: Laptop burns!
I guess it probably is a desktop processor.
It's a P4 3ghz HT.
I'm not very technically savvy regarding computer stuff.
How can I check the cpu temperature?
And what's a northbridge etc.?
How can I check the fan is running there. I can hear one and it gets louder when the laptop is doing something intensive.
Not sure if it's a new problem, but it's happening more and more nowadays.
Not sure if it's under guarantee and Acer are notoriously shite at fixing stuff so I've heard.

Re: Laptop burns!
You should be able to check the processor temp in the bios, and there are apps that can do it under windows, but I can't remember any of them right now.

I now realise, of course, that this was a foolish hope.

I had the exact same problem with this laptop (with a 3.06 P4 desktop processor in) very recently. Every time I tried to burn a DVD or play a game, it would get really hot, then turn itself off. So I sent it off to get it fixed and it seems to be working, but I only got it back a few days ago so I can't be sure it won't just go back.

When I worked on tech support we were given the advice to pass onto customer that laptops were not to be used on your lap (really).

Re: Laptop burns!
- Try to put 4 little things (pairs of corks taped together have proven to work) below the 4 corners of the laptop. It makes sure that enough air can pass underneath it...
- There are special "laptop coolers" you can buy. It's like a (moderately thin) "mat" or board you put below your notebook. There are fans built in to cool it. Either it's battery powered, or by USB.
Not too expensive (maybe about 30 euro ish?).
Dunno if they work or how loud they are.
- DON'T put your laptop on cloth-like stuff. It blocks the air-flow underneath it.
- It's not really necessary to measure the temperature, we all know it's too hot and you need to cool it somehow. But if you'd like to, download and use the great freeware system information tool AIDA32.

I only use mine on my lap because I'd been using it for several months and noticed it didn't get particularly hot.

Re: Laptop burns!
Mine gets hot after an hour or so on my lap. I usually put a towel or something in between my trousers and it.
I rarely put it on my lap though - I used to do it at home so I could watch TV while being on IRC or MSN, but don't need to at uni.

You shouldn't do that, it blocks the fan and will make the processor get hotter than usual.
