Someone decide my history dissertation for me
Basically, im in my 3rd year now, and 2 of my 6 modules are my history dissertation.
however, whilst everyone else is going to whirlwind meetings with their tutors and getting as far the "contents page!" i havent got a tutor, or a subject as i didnt go to any of the "setting it up" classes last year.
now, im not particularly worried about this, i may well end up just bashing it out in a weekend at the end of the year, but i would rather not tbh.
Sadly, i can't think of an interesting area of history, let alone an interesting question. I'm fairly liking 19th Century Russia atm, possibly because im reading a lot of Dostoevsky, so if someone had an idea for a particularly interesting area of study there as well it would be nice.
But really, all suggestions welcome.

Re: Someone decide my history dissertation for me
The Narodniki are an interesting area of russian history. All these socialists going out into the countryside to open the eyes of the russian peasantry and then being handed over to the police by those they wanted to liberate. Pretty cool innit?

How long ago does it have to be to qualify for "History"?
Can you write about something that happened a few months ago for example...

Re: Someone decide my history dissertation for me
There's a lot of things that can be called "history" tbh. As long as it's more than 50-100 years ago, you could do anything. You could write about fashion (in and out of court) between 1600 and 1900 AD, in Western Europe. I don't think you could do some ancient history thing similar to the TV series "what the ancients did for us". Though that'd be quite cool - "ancient discoverys that changed the world" or something. You could make mini catapults, but unfortunately I'm not sure you'd be allowed to do that.
Over the last 2 or more years, there must be a few things that you've read / heard about that you've thought "hang on a minute, I'd actually like to do more on this at some point" ? Or even pre university, if you read a summary of a particular area / period in history.
You've mentioned 19th Century Russia, but is that it?
That's what (hopefully) I'm doing my Maths dissertation on - I just picked interesting things from the list of things given to us.
(otherwise just pick something you know lots about and can write pages on).

The so-called "100 year war" between England and France. It's quite interesting.
The Chinese civil war, which ended in 1949 when Chang Kai-Chek fled to Taiwan.

well, i did my a level essay on feudal japan, which was quite fun.
the problem is that i have rather fallen out of love with history in the last year. I find it pretty tedious now and more or less can't wait till im finished with it.
also, there isnt anything i know enough about to write a dissertation on now. Im quite prepared to do loads of reading when the time comes, and as long as there are books on it, i know ill be able to do it. So its not much of an issue.
edit: Also, Zhukov, i dont like military history, i find it boring and macho. So don't bother with stuff like that.

Re: Someone decide my history dissertation for me
I can't see the 100 year war being that interesting. Linking Britain and France's heritage would be reasonably interesting I suppose. But the only really interesting, sorry funny, bit about the 100 year war were the 'breaks', got a bit bored, can't be arsed, staying at home for a bit kind of breaks.

Re: Someone decide my history dissertation for me
Following up on acropolis:
Research why Einar Gerhardsen was sent back to Norway in 1944. He was transfered from Sachenhausen to a norwegian camp called Grini. Gerhardsen later became Prime Minster and one of the most influental persons in the norwegian Labour Party (DNA).
Maybe the nazis wanted him to survive?

Re: Someone decide my history dissertation for me
What about something that happened in South American (which would end up explaining the current political state their atm) or something.
I only suggest it because i doubt many people would do something on that region.

Germany paid a lot for Lenin in those first months.
Also, try to find out what hapenned with Lenin's first group of trustees and for instance the communists that fled Germany when Hitler came to power.
I'll give you a small hint, they didn't live happily ever after.

I remember when I was walking around the UN plaza in San Francisco we saw this statue of Simon Bolivar who seemed to liberate half of South America in a fairly staggeringly short space of time. If the rest of us were half as productive we'd probably be in the andromeda galaxy by now. He might be interesting, or some aspect of his life or work as he's probably a bit too big a figure.

Re: Someone decide my history dissertation for me
If you enjoy 19th Century Russian history due to reading Dostoyevsky why not tie the two together somehow?
His books; at least to some extent must allow some degree of insight into the situation of the lower class in pre/post Industrialized St Petersburg. Why not do a study on the totalitarian power of the Tsar's regime, perhaps link it back to the situation Dostoyevsky found himself in during the 1850's.
This is more of a topic for a philosophy essay but you could trace the influence of Russian Existentialism throughout Europe.
Don't just pick a topic out of the air. What else are you interested in during that period?

Re: Someone decide my history dissertation for me
The development of the Latin American nations I found quite interesting (as already mentioned by JBG and Dace) - read Marquez's "100 Years of Solitude" for a feel of some of the issues/themes. In a weird sort of way European modern nationalism was heavily influenced by what happened in Latin America in the 19th Century.
If you're doing Russia then you could look at the lead-up to the revolution(s) at the start of the 20th Century. What caused the shift from a heavily traditional society to one of the most drastical social upheavals in European history.
On a more modern subject then post-war Italy or Greece are quite interesting in some ways. You had various acts of terrorism later on by the Red Brigades et al and straight after WW2 the Yanks essentially fixed the elections to stop the Commies winning.
Other potentially interesting subjects (admittedly most done to death) ; the Paris Commune, Spanish Civil War, post-revolutionary Cuba, Peru in the 1980's (Sendero, etc).
I'm sure you can see the theme there.

She was bonkers, she was.
I seem to recall she didn't want to stop being "Lady Diana" on her husband's ennoblement, and so tried to persuade him to become "Viscount Diana", and was then most upset at becoming Viscountess Norwich.

you exagerate, she just didn't want to have to be called 'lady norwich' and frankly I can see her point. the only things worse would be 'lady milton keynes' or 'lady s****horpe'
Her husband was an arse anyway ... but henry knows that already

I've always wanted to increase my understanding of the conflict between Israel and Palestine, and on a totally unrelated note to research into the relations between old Highland clans in Scotland.
Of course, having not really conducted any research into either field I am unable to tell you much material they'd provide, but I'd imagine Israel/Palestine would have contentious issues aplenty.

Re: Someone decide my history dissertation for me
When do you have to decide?
I had to pick my dissertation topic on the last day out of a list of about 10 pieces of crap.
I did this 5 minutes after the deadline on the last day of being able to choose.
So now I'm doing my dissertation on Catholic Emanipation in England and Wales.
You could write about Rosa Luxemborg who my Weimar Germany lectureer keeps telling us is the 'greatest woman to ever live' every single lecture.
