Big huge servers vs itty bitty likkle servers
I am replacing one of the old servers here, a PIII 600 in a huge case that hides under my desk and takes up lots of room that could be filled with old copies of Computer Weekly, with a smaller desktop sized unit.

The server currently holds all the general office/shop information which is backed up daily to a tape streamer fitted in another computer and also to 2 other servers so not having room to fit a backup device isnt a problem. So what are the flaws to my deceptively simple plan ?

You have to ask yourself, which looks more impressive? A tiny little cube that does the job and is hidden away or a massive HP-UX job that not only does the job but looks like it belongs on the bridge of a spaceship?

Also there is the matter of heat generated

A room full of huge servers chugging away is fine during winter but in summer my little office turns into a sauna because air conditioning 'isnt a priority'.......

Are you likely to want to expand it?
Unless you plan to house 6 harddrives, 3 zip drives, a few LS120's, a couple of CD burners and maybe a DVD burner in it for good measure, is there any reason to have a monster tower?
Get it as small as you can while still leaving room for any expansion you might want to do.
Surely a midi-atx case is fine? Maybe even a mini-atx?

These boxes will be servers and wont need anything other than a dvd drive and hard drive and I get these things at a very very good price. With more memory thrown in them and a 120gb drive they are perfect. The only thing that does suck is the brand

That'd do me nicely for i15, shame its £250 like, though this seems to be similar (without GF4 onboard and nF2 mobo) and is priced more respectably at about £200 from overclockers.co.uk.

Given both can be expanded with an AGP card is it worth saving £50 for the cheaper one performance wise? Or are there any other very petit cases barebones or not for around the same price (£150-200) that don't include the word 'Epia'?

Well, I just blew £350 on a Shuttle SN41G2 barebones and a WD 80gig Special Edition hdd with the 8meg cache 'madness', which should in theory arrive tomorrow.

Expect some kind of update like.

On the subject of huge big servers, HP are supposed to be upgrading one of our HP-UX servers (7 foot cabinet type server, bigjobs \o/) today but rang yesterday to change a few things. The engineer doing the upgrade was only passed the job yesterday and he nearly crapped himself when he saw it! HE wants to do it in three stages over three weeks with an external consultant on site (as well as himself) in case things go pear shaped. Apparently this is what's best described as the Upgrade From Hell! According to him we have a fair chance of not having a working modem or usable filesystem afterwards so his arse is kinda hyperventilating
