Neither is really good But most of the articles Ive read say to stay away from the PCI ones as they are cheap crappy peices of kit that arent worth the money you pay for them

at work we supply
USB
or
PCI
or
ROUTER
USB's tend to need 500mW of power, which can be more than some motherboards supply and hence your connection might drop a lot.
They're easy to configure though.
PCIs tend to be crap.
Router seems most stable of the three, but is more expensive..

depends on the router, but they usually arent too tricky to setup.
depending how many ports the router has,
you either
run a cable from that to a hub and plug the other machines in there
or plug the other machines into the router

I have a router modem, but if I had to choose between USB and PCI, I'd go for the PCI. If only for the sake of performance.
In my opinion a router is best. You can serve an entire LAN with one without needing another comp.

I thought that an USB device consumes more CPU capacity than an PCI device. I could be wrong tho...

Yes they normally do however the PCI card based ADSL modems are of very low quality and shift most of work over to the OS to handle

So they're kinda ADSL winmodems then?
I ask merely for information, ADSL isn't even a remote possibility for at least 5 years where I live

from what we experience troubleshooting them at work
PCI ADSL modems suck (cheap and crappy)
USB ADSL modems suck(too high power requirements for some mobos)
cheap routers suck (cheap and crappy)
i'd go find an ethernet one, since i have a network card, but thats just me..

tbh I havent seen anywhere selling ethernet based modems for ADSL. I'm not syaing you cant get them but they cerstainly arent very common in the UK
as for "cheap routers suck (cheap and crappy)" it depends what your comparing it agaisnt. Yes the cheaper routers might suck compared to the most expecensive ones BUT they are fantastic compared agasint a USB or PCI modem
