HELP: Cannot delete .avi file
I downloaded what i thought was Panic Room off Grokster.
But it turns out it's some German pr0n film.
Great as that may be, i would like to delete it, but Windows XP has other ideas.
If i try to delete the file i get an warning saying the file is too big for the recycle bin, and do i wish to proceed to permenantly delete the file, and i say yes.
But it always returns an error message saying that the file is being used by another application, but it's not.
I have tried: - Closing all applications and additional services so only the bare minimum are running and then trying to delete the file under my user profile (which is not the system administrator profile but a profile with administrtor privilages)
- Booting into safe mode and selecting the administrator profile at the login screen, and trying to delete the file.
None of this works, help !
I don't really want t be stuck with a 700mb German Pr0n film until i next reformat.
Any ideas?

Try making a boot disk go straight into dos (or can you do this without one? I forget) and try deleting it from there.

I know you said you closed down stuff but clicking on the cross in kazaa just puts it in the taskbar and doesn't stop it.
I dunno how computer literate you are, if this was all obvious ignore me

Detonate a nuclear device approximatly 100miles above your home. The resulting EMP surge will probably delete the porn.
If a nuclear device is unavailable, beating the offending PC with a large stick will do the same job, and with less anger from the Government.

Maybe you should give the helpdesk a ring?
Or drop to your knees in front of your pc (if it has a webcam, make sure it's looking at you (but not connected to the internet, might look silly)) and BEG your pc to remove it

Kazaa has a special delete that never attempts to put things into the recycle bin. Try that. In version 2.0 it's the little red cross in the "My Kazaa" section.
ps. ahahaha

YAY, i'm now pr0n free !
I searched some WinXP forums, and this appears to be a problem with files downloaded through P2P software.
I followed a link to this site which has an app which, will delete files as soon as your PC reboots, before windows gets it's grubby little hands on them and prevents you deleting them.
I wouldn't have minded if it was 700mb of quality pr0n.
But it was of poor quality, hardly any sheep !

press ctrl + alt + del
switch to tasks (or processes, this 2nd thingy)
shut down explorer.exe
click file / new task
start command.com
in the dos-window switch to the directory the file is in
delete the file
then restart explorer.exe

try this :
open the folder it's in, try deleting it, you'll get the protection error most likely.
click ok
right click on the file, goto properties
wait for the properties dialouge to appear (it may take a while)
when it does, close it
then delete the file

This is a bug with the preview function... sort it with this
open regedit
locate - HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
export that key. If deleting it has any unwanted effects, just double click the file to restore your registry at a later point.
delete {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
reboot or logoff/logon
problem sorted......

I get the same problem in with PowerDVD. After I've watched a movie on it, it wont allow me to deleete the file until I re-run powerdvd and remove the movie file from the queing system.

if you've not already solved it do the following...
go start->run and type cmd (then enter). or get a dos prompt some other way.
go to the folder its in by typing...
cd \program files\kazaa\my shared folder\
or something like that (check to see the folder name).
then type...
del hardcore_german_pr0n.avi
(but with the right filename).
it should say 'access denied'. Thats ok.
hold alt+ctrl+del, go to processes and select "explorer.exe" (not iexplore.exe) and go end process.
now retype the delete option in the command box...
del hardcore_german_pr0n.avi
and it should be gone.
do alt+ctrl+del again, go file->run and type 'explorer' to get windows back again.
easeh! (o:

usually it does, but i would guess this is some incomplete file.
i had the same problem a few times when i renamed non-finished downloads to check for fakes.
what coffee wrote should work (his explanation is better than mine a few posts above)

Heh i never actually explained anything (o:
The problem is in the preview - as soon as you click the file explorer tries to generate a thumbnail + get other info from it via the video codec. If the movie file is screwed causing an infinite loop in the codec (look at explorer.exe's cpu resources, it'll be 99%-ish) you can see the problem. You subsequently cant delete the fecker as its locked as its still trying to generate a thumbnail (which is why you have to kill explorer).
I've not tried shift-deleting it but i imagine it would have the same (file locked) problem.

Turn off preview:
- open explorer
- tools -> folder options
- select "use windows classic folders" instead of "enable web content in folders"
This will also give you some extra security against potential virus files (like *.EML files (outlook email files)) since the code inside is not executed when clicked upon.
You might not want to disable webcontent in folders though because you perhaps have a fancy background. Then you can alter the template:
- go to desired folder in explorer
- right click in the folder view -> "customize this folder"
- follow steps in wizard and select "Choose or edit an HTML template for this folder"
- select any template without the preview window...
I don't know if this will disable code execution (I presume it does) but you will be rid of the preview
(disclaimer: This is a win2k solution and might not be compatible with winXP)
