java + jsp questions

i have a large-ish site, but i want to do various things that are a bother to do in php (such as database validation + reports) since they wll take a while to run, and php times out, and its just generally messy for that sort of thing so....

how easy is it to interface java with mysql (i may shift to postgre)? I'd also like to play with jsp, so has anyone got any links for a free windows apache extension to run jsp on?

Basically, links, links, links!

1. Easy. MySQL has a JDBC interface on their site, so does PostgreSQL.
2. Apache has their own JSP implementation called Tomcat.
"JSP tutorial", "JDBC tutorial" are two things to search for.
