Opera is great.
Mouse gestures are the best thing...like ever, and its sooo quick (and i'm on a fast connection, yet still noticeable)
Still not managed to figure out the news-reader, but i'm sure it will come one day....
All go get it.
And you can get rid of the ad for just $20 if you're a student, and really, how hard can it be to "borrow" and ID-card from someone and scan?

I have to use Opera when proofing web pages for cross-browser compatibility, and I've been using 7 since the beta series was first released.

Opera has an extremely strict adherence to standards, which made it difficult to construct pages for version 6 that would render the same in all other browsers. Fortunately most of the problem areas have been addressed in version 7 (such as layers).

Expect a patch or update for v7 - there are still problems with it. Like hanging on Flash 6 content, conflicting user options etc.

I like some of the features of Opera, but it always seems to display page elements in a way that is distinct from all other browsers which render pages pretty much the same (IE, NS etc). And when I've made a page to look a certain way, that pisses me off big time.

My "likelihood of usingness scale", which is not a commentary on the value of any browser, goes:
IE6 > Opera7 > NS > KQ > *

It sucks donkey c0ck.

Or...

I cant see any dramatic improvement over Mozilla that justify paying for it.

Its not got anything huge wrong with it, but just lots + lots of niggly things - no middle click tab opening, the fact tabs take focus automatically by default (and the option to change it isnt obvious), and its just plain ugly (with my pc theme anyway).

As for mouse gestures - I used them for about a month when Opera 5 was released, and they didnt do any thing for me - whats the point gesturing at a link when you can just click it?

Mozilla wins on the grounds of development community too - anything you can get for Opera is no doubt availible as a plugin on mozdev (such as leech - download every image link on a site anyone as well as advanced tabbing, gestures etc).

It just doesnt do enough to justify the payment.

www.mozilla.org

just turn on the modern theme rather than the nasty default one.

Middle click is used for autoscroll, the omission of which was a glaring flaw in mozilla. If you want to open it in a new tab, move the mouse over it, hold down the right button, and move the mouse down. If you want it to open in the background, move the mouse down then up. Its not as 'easy' as pressing the middle button, but you get used it to it within a day or so, and its a price worth paying for the introduction of autoscroll.

How is Preferences -> Windows not obvious? Thats the place I'd expect the settings for opening a new window to appear... Having the Preferences dialog within the File menu is stupid, but youre being a bit picky if you hold that against it.

The default settings are pretty crappy (far too many tool bars, and the butons are enormous), but you can turn it off, shrink the buttons, and use a difference skin...

http://autoscroll.mozdev.org/ - not a problem. Thats the beauty of open source - if something ticks someone off or is missing then it can be created in a plugin or even a mod of the original code - phoenix, which although isnt as fast or small as opera yet its getting there.

I shouldnt have to 'get used to it', i want to middle click links to open them, i've become so used to it (for me its like mouse gestures to you).

I need a compelling reason to use Opera over moz (since you have to pay) and I just dont see any.

I've always used IE to browse the web, but I gave it a try, and its very good, but this is the one weak point: the autoscroll in IE is much more 'fluent'. Rather difficult to work with as I constantly use the autoscroll :/
