Come on Scotland
Predictions?
Personally i think it will be (Holland) 2-1 (Scotland).
Not so much of a prediction really more of a hope.

The sound on 5 working for everyone else?
3-2
Ferguson to score both. It would be nice to have 3 home nations in Portugal .
Wales to win 1-0.

3-0 Half Time. I cant even watch the second half. Utter shite. Its not as though the dutch are playing brilliantly, we just have nobody to hold up the ball and a referee who is intimidated by the crowd (Holland are getting the decisions in all the 50/50's , even the bookings).

I had a funny feeling Scotland would get thrashed today. Not by this much though, i was expecting more like 3-0.
I guess the Dutch have finally shown us what they're capable of. Maybe they'll even beat some good teams in Euro 2004

I didn't quite expect us to win either to be honest. But when they scored the 1-0 I figured it'd be a walkover.
Thing is, during the tournaments self we play our best games. Or atleast it seems that way. I can't remember a single qualifying session in which we played briliantly and outclassed our opponents by miles.
We shall see what the future brings

Hardly a big shock that you won when you can leave the likes of Kluivert, Makaay and Seedorf on the bench. I wouldnt put my money on you or Spain winning the Euro Championship though.
France, Italy, England and German are probably the favourites. The Check Republic always seem to qualify well but then not perform in the championship so i'ld put them in the same category of under performers as Spain and Holland.
Unfortunately i cant see France messing up this time round .

No offence meant, but Holland have a far better team than England do at the moment. Id make them my second favourites (unfortunately, behind France also).
Germany are shit though, so you dont need to worry about them, England would destroy them.

Re: Come on Scotland
Never ever rule out Germany. They went into the world cup being shit, they came 2nd.
Holland have better individual players, England have a better team. The dutch team has too many egos, they never seem to want to play for each other. I cant even remember a championship where some kind of internal rift hasnt come up in the dutch team, the fact they dont win anything is due to their constant squabbling.
By the summer we may well have the best strike force in Europe - Owen and Rooney. Beckham, Sholes and Gerrard would make it into pretty much every midfield except Frances. Recently at the back we have looked a bit suspect, but in the World Cup Cambel and Ferdinand were one of the best centre back partnerships, so maybe they will find that form again, or Terry might step in for one of them.

Today was the very first appearance in which Van Nistelrooy actually played well. He now has my vote of confidence, if he can pull this off against quality teams as well, I see no objections against him being our default striker.

Im not ruling england out, god no. And england are more of a team than holland yes, but id hardly call england a unit as of yet.
* No apparent first choice goalkeeper. James is terrible, and Robinson is surviving a bit on the fact he's young, english, and first choice for a premiership club - glossing over points that he dropped six to portsmouth and leeds are foot of the table, etc.
* Rio hasnt looked the same since the world cup, and you dont know how long youll be without him anyway because of this whole ban thing
* Sol Campbell looks like hell get the nod ahead of Terry - is he good enough? ( a talking point, not a sarcastic dig)
* No definitive choice made between cole and bridge - and neither of them is the worlds best left back either
* As of yet, no left midfielder (and only one friendly in which to try out Thompson - in which youll sub him on along with 10 other poor sods)
* You can only play two of Scholes Gerard and Lampard unless one is stupidly put out on the left or you play the silly narrow diamond formation - and has Scholes been performing at International level for England for a long time? No.
* Owen always does the business for England regardless of the critics, but you still dont have a partner for him. Heskey? Beattie? The latter hasnt been given a real chance but neither have looked that good (and even when Heskey does play well he gets bad reviews). Vassell? Rooney? Can you make the most of David Beckhams crosses when you have two midgets up front, or do you still need a target man?
Of course, this still makes England a lot more united than Holland, but i wouldnt call England a settled unit just yet.

If England win Euro 2004 I will show up outside your door wearing an England football jersey and that's a promise. They have zero chance of winning it. As a matter of fact Ireland have a better chance of winning it AND THEY AREN'T EVEN GOING. I like how you call spain and holland under-performers when England haven't made it to a major final since 1966 when most of the current england squad wasn't even born though
I see deffeh has taken apart england systematically above me but for the record.
David James in goal. He plays in the first division. He may be able to raise himself for a game once a month but expecting him to play well in four or five games? **** off.
Ashley Cole is not a full-back full ****ing stop and Gary Neville is a crime against football.
Sol Campbell is good but Rio hasn't played well in a while and all the shit he's dealing with right now cannot put him in the best frame of mind especially when it comes to England.
Collectively the entire first choice back five is prone to howlers every once in a while. Between the five of them I predict at least two in euro 2004. The back-up are all decidedly premiership level players (upson) too old (southgate) too young (ledley king). Also spurs lol, injuries lol on king.
Beckham is good but doesn't make a team, you don't have a left wing and the sooner you call up thompson the better for all of you.
Scholes is fantastic for Man utd but can't score for england, you know why? Too many gerrard and beckham long wallops up for owen to chase onto. Remember the end of the Brazil game in the world cup with all those long balls that never really looked like being vaguely threatening? That's because Eriksson won't get this England time to pass the ball around and look for openings possibly. Owen's pace is a weapon but without him, against the top teams, England won't score goals end of story.
Gerrard is good and coming on well this year. If he improves his disciplinary record and makes a few more decent decisions in the midfield instead of hoofing the ball downfield for owen to chase. Problem with England's midfield is lack of strength in depth. Lampard, Cole and Butt are very good premiership players but I seriously doubt their ability at the very top level. Cole is also too wrong and makes crap choices when he's on the ball consistently, he also thinks he's Zidane.
Up front you have two good attackers but after this it's a joke. Emile Heskey, I won't comment here because I might not stop. Beattie is a premiership level player like andy cole in his earlier years. He won't make the step-up. Vassell is similar. As for Owen and Rooney owen is over-used and Rooney has disciplinary problems and is perhaps too young for a major challenge at this stage.
How anyone can class England as one of the favourites for euro 2004 is beyond me.

Re: Come on Scotland
My England team would be Robinson, Bridge, Terry, Ferdinand, Neville, J Cole, Gerrard, Scholes, Beckham, Owen, Rooney.
But I'm sure the man who spent £210M to win serie A knows better.
England have the knack of playing shite and still winning in competitive games, so who are we to argue with Sven on this basis
Lets face it though, we don't have the footballing intelligence to outwit Italy, France or Germany plus the ability to sustain the portuguese on home turf in a competitive game.
Personally my money is on Italy for 2004, watching them in action in the league and when they played Wales swung it for me.

England have beaten one decent international team (argentina) in a competitive match under Sven.

In a one-off game it might come down to determination or who's more up for it on the day. But you'd probably need to beat two or three of those teams (add in netherlands and spain for good measure) in order to actually win the freaking thing.
For me it can only be France. After their shocking performance in the world cup they have to perform. Plus this is Zidane's last tournament at the peak of his powers. Rock-solid defence also good going forwards with thuram at the height of his game, able ball-winners in makalele and vieira, creative midfield options alongside zidane, lightning pace up front, match-winners on the bench and they don't have a tendency to fall apart on the big stage.

Re: Come on Scotland
No doubt that Italy and France are far and away the best teams in Europe. It's just that the Italian players seem to be heading towards a peak right now, and that after their shocking loss in the final last time, I've got a feeling they won't let it slip.
Plus there is no Brazilian ref to screw them over and hand the game to South Korea on a plate.

Italy just lack, well, zidane to be honest heh. Nobody else is in the same league as him, he could probably play some of madrid's fixtures in the primera liga by himself and win

Re: Come on Scotland
For all you say about the england team, and believe me I have my doubts as well, you're talking about a team that has lost 1 important match under erikssen. We're not world beaters, we're playing like shite, but we're getting the results, isnt that supposed to be the mark of a good team?

Firstly you've played two important matches under Sven. Won one, lost one isn't a fantastic record exactly. Also yes the sign of a great team is one that doesn't play well and gets the results, however to be a great team you still have to play well occasionally. I've seen the english do this a grand total of once (germany away). Good teams will also occasionally play very well against the average sides.

Re: Come on Scotland
sorry to scotland but id much rather have the orange in the championship then have them miss out, the world cup just wasnt the same without the cloggies showing up.
France will win.
as for england, well me lads its a bit like tim henman, quarter finals, maybe semis and thats it.

It's just that an England that plays dire football like it does (and you know it does) is very difficult to get behind. It's just that it seems that eventually in a tournament England will be horribly exposed as nearly always. A point will come where we just can't cut the mustard (look at A Cole or Campbell) defensively or we lack ideas, as if Gerrard isn't firing and teams are prepared for Beckham's crosses we look pretty flat - maybe Joe Cole can change that - when he's allowed to do what he likes he's terrific. Last season gave him a bit of bite and fire, which improved him a lot.
