A new marketing low
You've heard of viral videos.
You'v probably read how companies are trying to create stuff that people will pass around in emails in order to promote their products.
Well now there are companies with the soul purpose of inventing concepts that will hook people and compel them to pass the link to a friend. Somehow that get's me. Like record companies looking for a catchy riff that will bring millions, greed has become an incentive to understand how our brains work with the sole purpose of manipulating us to perform some action, such as spend money or forward emails.
I thought that this company that create this junk with an agenda and the content on their site just crossed some sort of line. The videos and images on their site, the experience of them were a poignant reinforcement of what sick lows greed will take humanity too.

Well, since the switch to digital TV in the Uk, TV advertising is less effective because the market is more segmented.
Radio advertising, once the daddy of advertising is now also starting to slump, and banner/pop up advertising is dying a death.
So they have to come up with some new and interesting way to catch peoples attention.
Quite clever I think, and at least you have the opportunity to not open them, unlike the 4 advert breaks per hour on telly, or the 15 minutes of advertising per hour on average on radio.
bravo that company.

Re: A new marketing low
I don't see a catchy riff or flash game as a grievous threat to my physical integrity, and I'd count finding out how our brains work as a good thing but hey ho. Anything called viral must be bad.
So what evidence do you have that any of these are subversive viral marketing and not just the homepages of creative people?

My first guess would be that s|k misinterpreted http://showdown.contagiousmedia.org/, but that doesn't have ze's page.
Edit: oh, it does. Case solved.

Re: A new marketing low
I don't understand, that doesn't look like a company's website to me. And the "send this page to a friend" is hardly a big part of the site. Even if you click on it, all it does is open up your e-mail client and add the url - not even an advert or "This site brought to you by....."
If you don't like the website, don't visit it?

I don't see what's particularly unusual or insidious about this.

Anything done by organizations with lots of money is wrong. Always. Having lots of money is wrong.
Compare starwars kid, here's a video made in innocence that has *real* value. It wasn't engineered to be anything. This viral nonesense is trying to replicate the draw some interesting videos have. I hate it. You don't have to.

When lucas made star wars he insisted not on having a large payment for the film when it was released, but instead a significant percentage of the box office gross.
The studio at the time thought it wouldn't generate a lot of money and agreed.
The subsequent other films, books, games, merchandise, all of which lucas must approve and receive a large cut of before release have nowt to do with money do they?

Ok, an article about that contest. What companies do you think are behind the scenes? The only organisation mentioned there is Eyebeam, some art gallery or something, who are officially undeniably cool for commissioning Pizza Party.

No it isn't. Having all the money and power to go and make up rules that suit you, exploit the powerless, orchestrate efforts at your leisure without a democratic process (of all the people involved) is unfair.

like The Ring? That was a pretty clever way of getting your video passed on; "pass on this video or die horribly"
