Laptops
Ok, my girlfriend is looking to buy a new laptop for about £500.
She won't be doing anything complicated with it, or playing games on it or anything which requires a high-end performance. DVD drive, hard disk space for mp3's and pictures etc is the most it'll probably be doing.
Reliability is the main issue along with ease of use and weight.
So where is a good place to get a laptop from?
Thanks

Re: Laptops
It's better to go for a make of laptop rather than a retailer per se. In my experience, Acer laptops are reliable, and fairly cost effective - have a look on somewhere like www.ebuyer.com for the kind of thing you want.

Re: Laptops
dont buy 'gericom' (if they even sell that crap in uk) my keyboard was broken right from the start (the del-key was somehow locked, so that it deleted your whole document when you only tried to delete a letter and didnt take care). and now the te screen doesnt work unless you open it in one specific angle. really crap quality dont try to buy as cheap as you can get.

Re: Laptops
I'm also looking for a laptop rather than a PC, but not sure if I can fit in my requirements with my price range.
Decent processer
512 mb/1 gb of RAM
DVD/RW drive
Big hard drive, preferably 160 GB
No special screen requirements
Ethernet card, wifi preferred
Windows XP
Proper graphics card
Is this possible for £800 or less?

Re: Laptops
I think you'll struggle to find a laptop with a hard drive as big as that for any price, but I may be wrong.
Most of the ones I see are 40GB or 60GB

Re: Laptops
i think you're asking for too much with the price range specified. you'd struggle to get a hd that big also, as LHC has said.
I would recon what you want will cost around £1k

Re: Laptops
is it a good idea to buy laptops online?
I'm almost tempted to go look round somewhere like PC world just because it makes everything easier if you have somewhere to take it if something needs doing.

Re: Laptops
Yeah somewhere like Dell/PC World/whatever will do something like you are after without any hassle involved.

www.laptopsdirect.co.uk
And acer have a reasonable rep so far as cheap and cheerful goes (plenty of choice in the < £500 range as well).

Re: Laptops
Thanks megla, by skimping on the hard-drive I'm finding something a little closer to what I need.
What sort of connections do/will external hard-drives have in the next few years? I know this is a tricky question, but wondering if I'll need certain type of connections, etc.

Re: Laptops
Well firewire and USB2 are the current choices, and it works adequately.
It's never going to be blazingly fast but for whacking all your music on or something it's fine.

Re: Laptops
I only have one reccomendation- it goes for both laptops and PC's [though manufacturer's tend to skimp more on this when it comes to laptops]. A minimum of 512mb RAM. Most PC's running windows XP tend to use from 250-400mb of RAM idling- depending on what you have installed, so any less than 512 will mean plenty of use for that ole slow page file.
