GIF Ad Banners
Hey chaps
I was wondering if anyone could help me. My year 10s have to create some graphics for a website (a navigation bar, some rollover buttons and an animated advertising banner).
For each of the pieces of work they have to research other examples of the graphic, then plan and create their own. The navigation bar and rollover buttons were easy to research, but I'm not sure where to find some animated banners that aren't Flash.
They need to be GIF, as it has to be animated and they need to find out the file size and dimensions etc. Every ad banner I've seen seems to be Flash though! Does anyone know of any sites where I could show them some examples of GIF advertising banners? I need 4-5. Cheers!

Using Flash is a different module/unit. This unit focusses on basic web graphics.
The responses in this thread are pretty much a general indication of why people don't like posting in GD any more. Noone wants to be friendly or help, but instead just try to look smart or put others down.
Thanks guys!

Re: GIF Ad Banners
Whilst I do like to try to look smart and I enjoy putting others down, there is a serious element to my post. Old websites, from 1994 would be full of that kind of thing.
What you would search for is more difficult, but I would suggest googling for some TV shows or something that were popular in the mid-1990s when everybody absolutly have to have their own fansite.
You'll probably have to skip to page 300 or something but they'll be there. If you do this, try to pick something the kids will know or that you can claim is retro-cool, which is exactly what you should say.
'hey kids! Check out this wicked website from the time when the internet was only for the l33t! It's retro-cool!'

I gave you the solution you were looking for, you just refused to accept it. You're an idiot, that's the problem. Don't confuse that with GD being shit.
P.S Damn you ASG.

Also, to be perfectly honest, I really can't be bothered with this whole thing again. It ranks just below 'GD is dying' and that plane thread in shitness.

Go ahead.
The skills learnt are:
* General graphical ICT skills (crop/resize/dimensions/vectors etc)
* Folder/File structure
* File types (especially images)
* How websites use graphics
* Thinking about the audience that your graphic is aimed at
* Thinking about the purpose that your graphic is for (what is it supposed to do? does it achieve it?)
* Being able to evaluate work
* Understanding the link between planning -> creating -> presenting (useful throughout life)
Oh, and they also end up with a GCSE at the end of it, which is pretty easy work compared to some of the stuff they have to do at key stage 4.
Or maybe I should be teaching them about obscure, useless maths?

Within the next 5 years, it's been predicted that ICT will replace Science as one of the "core 3 subjects" - maths/english being the other 2. Lots of further education establishments (colleges, sixth foms etc) require a pass (A*-C) in GCSE ICT as part of their unconditional offers.

I'm actually just pleased that this coursework isn't based around creating retarded databases and doing mail merges - this is actually relatively fun to teach/learn.
The gradings (if you are interested) for this section of the coursework are:
Pass (equivalent to C)
Create a static advertising banner, with suitable text/graphics
Merit (equivalent to B)
Produce a static advertising banner, with some form of user interaction. This should be fit for purpose. (the user interaction can be something simple like a hyperlink)
Distinction (equivalent to A-A*)
Produce an animated/moving advertising banner, combining text/graphics. This should be fit for audience and purpose.

Re: GIF Ad Banners
It's ok, I know how to create it. They have to research other banners before creating their own though, and I wanted to find some websites with examples on.
I've found some now - cheers.

An "advanced" knowledge of ICT (read: GCSE) is more useful - practically speaking - than an "advanced" knowledge of the sciences.

A good knowledge of scientific theories is not practically useful (ie: in day to day application). A good knowledge of ICT is useful for most people.
Sorry, I'm struggling to see why such a simple concept like the definition of "practical use" is so difficult for you to understand

Re: GIF Ad Banners
let's face it. ICT is practical in any way, shape or form. The world is slowly conforming to the standard that most people use or know how to use a PC. The The only people who don't, are no doubt people over a certain age who can't grasp the concept, or people who refuse to bow down to the technical mumbo jumbo they hear from their grandchildren (or both).

1. Don't take words out of my mouth. I was talking about ICT as a whole, not this tiny module of the coursework (which will take about 2-3 lessons).

As well as this, there's the very basic skills involved in understanding Open/Save/Copy/Paste etc.

No Tom you are missing the point. The banner project is part of your subject area, as was the stupid LETS USE EXCEL WHEN REALLY I SHOULD BE USING A DATABASE area.
ICT has the potential to be useful, however what is taught in schools is generally not.
Im also confused why you would teach children to Crop/Paste pictures and also teach them SVG's.
It's like saying to someone, heres a wheel, heres a screw and there's a car.
Unless by teach you mean "hey kids look this image is cool, but I cant show you how to make them as they aren't in the curriculum plan for today!"

If kids haven't grasped these concepts by high school there really is little hope for them. Glad to see you are aiming high Tom!

He didn't ask for help, he asked for people to do it for him because he's too idle. Or maybe an ICT teacher can't use Google now?
I am not critcising his teaching methods, I'm critcising his support for the curriculum which he teaches from.

He did actually get an answer (someone told him to google a set of 3 words which would have given him the answer). After that, the topic evolved.

So he gave them the coy little wave and realized it probably would have been more effective if he hadn't been lying on their turkey.

Sorry, I'm struggling to see why such a simple concept like the definition of "practical use" is so difficult for you to understand

I'm afraid that neither are actually practically useful. Both are merely bases from which true understanding and development of skills can arise at a higher level of education. I'm not criticising the curriculum in any sense either, after all one must start at the beginning but it is patronising of you to claim that your subject prepares anyone to sell themselves in todays IT marketplace.

Re: GIF Ad Banners
In this thread, TomKat disqualifies himself as a schoolteacher and the English educational system as a whole.
