Frothing milk
i am hoping at least one of you works in starbucks. there seems to be enough of them...
anyhoo
i have bought a 20 quid espresso / capuccino making machine. it has a little nozzle that puts out steam for frothing
now
i dont have a fancy steel jug and my attempts at using various other 'holding implements' for the milk have failed.
ive managed to burn myself repeatedly and spray milk all overmyself (ahahah you might think - but not..its not funny)
how in gods name do you froth milk???
ALL I WANTED WAS A GODDAMN CAPUCCINO IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK!
what kind of 'jug' do i use (from around the house - i tried a pint glass so far) and how much milk should i be putting in....

Re: Frothing milk
ive got enough problems trying to remind them NOT to put squishy cream into my hot chocolate ( after telling them repeatedly ) , to pay attention to what they do. i`d imagine though they put half a jug in, leave it on its own to froth/heat up a bit then take the jug elsewhere.

'I often use a straw to blow bubbles really hard' - opening statement at the Michael Jackson trial and also a very good method of frothing milk.

Re: Frothing milk
put about an inch of milk into the bottom of the pint glass (not ideal as its made of glass, but never mind) insert nozzle into milk, introduce steam to milk, profit!
(seriously, the higher sided the better, and something with a handle would be even better, that steam is very hot when it comes out and you really don't want to splash yourself)

Re: Frothing milk
ok
this is perfectly simple
IF A ****ING MORON EARNING MINIMUM WAGE AT STARBUCKS CAN DO IT SO CAN I
i have no reduced the milk to a tiny amount at the bottom of a mug....im holding the handle of the mug....
i insert nozzle just below the surface of the milk and let rip with the steam
it swirls
it gurgles
it makes all the same noises that it does in coffee shops
it bubbles up no end
it spurts every now and again like dace in a kiddie playground.
but
when i remove the nozzle
thinking
MUST BE DONE BY NOW ITS BEEN IN THERE 20MINUTES!
the bubbles dissapear and im left with boiling hot milk..
WHAT IN GODS NAME IS WRONG,

With one of those "cafetier" things you can froth really easily.

the pain in my hands and the hotness of various cups/mugs/glasses surrounding me would suggest otherwise.

Maybe you should hire someone from Starbucks to do it for you at your place.

Re: Frothing milk
the way i was reading it he is already doing that, the other option is that he is placing the steamer too far into the milk, and therefore heating it rather than frothing it, but from what JJ is saying, he isn't using enough milk for this to be a factor

Cold skim milk will froth more easily than room temperature, 2%, or whole milk. The less fat content in milk the denser the froth will be.

Re: Frothing milk
- Heat some semen on gas mark five for twenty minutes.
- Pour through a funnel into your drink.
- Serve.
This probably won't help you with your milk frothing problem, but it may be something worth trying anyway.

Re: Frothing milk
For the LOVE of GOD
Place cold milk in some kind of receptacle, preferrably metallic - a small teapot will do nicely if you don't have a proper metallic jug.
Before turning steam on - insert nozzle into milk so that it is RIGHT AT THE BOTTOM of the milk.
Slowly turn steam on and once steam is on full pull nozzle up so that it is just on the surface of the milk but NOT above as this will cause spraying.
Now watch the bubbles form. As the milk starts to froth, pull the jug/whatever down so that the nozzle remains on the surface (ovbiously the milk expands when frothed)
When you have enough froth turn the heat down and insert the nozzle directly in to the centre of the milk to heat the milk.
Done. Turn steam nozzle off.
Important - now take the jug/whatever and swirl it about. This will cause all the foam to rise to the top. Now when you pour you will get equal measures of hot milk and frothed milk which is what you want.

For goodness sake don't buy this thing! It doesn't make coffee - it makes toxic sludge then makes your kitchen smell like a cow shed on a hot day. Beware!!!

Re: Frothing milk
Use low fat milk
sugar will make the froth stay longer (it´s like viagra!). Use powdered for dilution easiness.

Re: Frothing milk
It is sin not to use full cream milk, these heathens that use skim milk are simply not doing it right.
I did the following for Omega2 once showing the whole process: http://members.iinet.net.au/~mckeon/coffee.jpg
You could try and source a special frothing milk called 'Crema'.
If you're really desperate I'll digitise a video demonstrating how to do it.

Re: Frothing milk
Just put the cup of milk under the steam thing. Open steam valve. Let.
Don´t close the valve untill the sound goes from high pitched to a low rumble. Ready!

i believe there was a discussion as to your sexual orientation again and it 'came up' that maybe your constant homo jokes are a result of not enough sex...
then the conversation went on and someone suggested that you need to 'try going gay' or something but in a way that you could always 'retreat' if necessary.
i simply stated that i didnt run a 'discrete' cock agency so couldnt really help you there.
something like that anyway.
