"Survival Instincts"

** Prologue **

He sat there looking upwards, towards the patchy sky. He wasn't really looking for anything; but as the wind swept across his face, he could almost feel the soft touch of the evening clouds as if they were brushing against his nose. The sun had just started to meet the horizon in it's regular daily ritual, and the breeze had began to carry some whisps of the promised night coolness yet to come. The boy sneezed, and sat up. The shadows cast across the field in front of his Gramp's farmhouse were endless; he knew they'd soon cover the whole land. He was reassured however by the wafting smell of roast lamb coming from inside, luring him in out of the day's ceremonius amber finalé to a more comforting haven.

As he sat to the table he was met by a modest spread of lamb, new potatoes and many number of vegetables that he knew he wasn't going to enjoy. Still, he knew the rules, and those veg were his gateway to something else entirely - dessert! His Gramps was serving the food carefully prepared by Nana, and he waited patiently as the meat was carved; releasing a new wave of that scent he caught in the wind not 5 minutes earlier. Saliva started to build in his mouth as the anticipation grew - he hadn't eaten all day - until the point he had to swallow, just so he didn't choke when he stole a lonesome deep breath. His Gramps saw this and smiled, the way only an old person can, like he was saying "you young'uns are so impatient!".

The first slice of freshly seasoned lamb had just relaxed itself onto the plate when the ambience took a swift change in pace and the whole house started to shake. The wooden boards started to groan and the copper pots started rattling off of the walls. The table started to judder and move across the floor. As if sensing a sinking ship, the plates tried to throw themselves overboard, until Nana came and forbid this by grabbing all the bowls she could; Gramps quickly followed suit, sparing a hand for the tray the lamb sat upon. A couple of glasses broke free and fell to their demise upon the stone floor, sending a shattering of glass in every direction. Startled but not concerned, the old couple looked at each other and then to the boy who was still at his chair, unafraid. The kid got up and walked to the window, knowing what he'd see.

From the hills arose monsterous giants of the sky; huge metallic goliaths ascending slowly. Surrounding them a swarm of smaller crafts, gaining altitude faster than their larger companions. The boy could only look on in awe as the space ships zoned in on the stars above, the land still shaking from the thunderous roar of the engines. He could see the lake from where he stood, and the ripples were all going in one direction, as if the water itself was trying to escape from the noise.

But still, the boy was without fear. He turned to his grandparents, and a small sly smile appeared in the corner of his mouth.

He said confidently "One day, I'll join them. One day I'll battle among the stars, and on that day not even God shall have mercy on those who fight against me" as he turned back to gaze up at the battleships disappearing in to the stars.

Chapter 1 -

An explosion overhead caught the crew off-gaurd. Sparks shot across the bridge and an ensign ducked for cover, before realising it was just a bulkhead acting up. They had taken damage, but the NewDawn fleets had sustained worse, and been sent packing. The latest battle had ended a while ago, and the fleet was on it's way back to the Domain. The fight had lasted but hours, but it was just the most recent clash in what seemed like an eon of conflict. The navigation officer calmly plotted a course around a small asteroid belt, and redirected all the coordinates to the rest of the fleet. It wasn't his job; but as the navigation officer to the fleet's flagship, he liked to lead by example. On that bridge, everybody did their part for The Fleet and every man on every ship was better for it.

As it happened, the last in a long line of NewDawn raids had been meager at best. They were an alliance who knew they were beaten, and every fight they got into only underlined this fact some more. Their attacks were becoming desperate; disorganised. Every resource they captured were no more than consolatory gestures; just small glories that their propeganda machine at home could make a meal of. The war was ongoing, but there was only one outcome by this point. Everyone but NewDawn could see this.

Nearing home, conversation on the bridge was mute. The fighting, although prosperous, still drained a lot of energy from the ensemble of officers and crew that had been fighting so hard recently. The Alliance had entered the war with more at stake. It had more planets to protect but more resources to call upon. Although there had been a couple of instances of uncertainty, the the Alliance's Empire had done nothing but continue to grow, and outgrow the rest of the universe at a much higher rate. NewDawn saught supremecy, but are staring down the barrel of certain disappointment. The shadows cast upon worlds everywhere by previous NewDawn campaigns were being lit up by our forces fighting against them. They'd won their two previous wars through deviant tactics and shameless political backstabbery. The had allied everyone who was a threat and rained down a barrage of destruction on those forces too small or too weak to fight them off. They had won the cowards way. Their fight now is for their third consecutive victory. They seek to end this third war dominant once again. The Alliance though, had other plans. NewDawn's goal was to win their third war and claim unrivaled success. The Alliance had one purpose.

Denial.

Denied would NewDawn be in their quest to lay the universe to waste again. Denied would NewDawn be when they attempted to own the universes resources and selfishly claim them for their own. Denied would they be when they took on The Alliance.

So far everything was going to plan. Every time NewDawn struck, The Alliance would strike back hard; faster. For everything NewDawn took, they lost a lot more. The Captain had a lot to do with this. Nobody knew much about him - where he came from, how old he was, or that he still got small sense of satisfaction to hear the loud roar of a fleet of engines - but when he spoke, people listened. When he gave orders, they were followed. The system worked and so people followed it. They followed him. The Chief of Security for The Impact (the flagship of the fleet) watched The Captain as he sat in his chair, centered in the middle level of the bridge. He was just starting at the deck, looking thoughtful. He always looked deep in thought, and only reacted when the situation demanded his attention. Who knows what he was thinking about. Maybe he was evaluating their last conflict, perhaps already making plans for the battles yet to come. Maybe he was just looking at the shards of bulkhead scattered along the floor; refugees of their rightful place overhead.

The Fleet was close by, following The Impact through the gaps in the asteroid field, minding not to have any unneccessay casualties. The Tian, a cruiser that was older than The Impact, was a few ships back. It had sustained a lot of damage and was just about holding together. The crew had suffered heavy losses and death filled the air. They had caught the majority of attention from the NewDawn attack but their long-range scanning equipment was still the best in the fleet. Somehow, it had remained unscathed. The officer in charge of using it, however, hadn't fared so well. A NewDawn fighter ship had lost its sheilds and weapons wasn't going to make the return journey, so had decided to fly full speed into the side of the Tian. Although two decks below the observatory room, the collision caused an explosion in one of the service elevators that broke into the observation room and burnt the arm clean off of the officer on duty, who also sustained burns to the rest of his torso. It hadn't killed him, but he was on life support in the medical bay, and the medics who were treating him weren't hopeful of a recovery.

In his stead was a new recruit, fresh out of the academy. He had majored in communications, but had yet to familiarise himself with The Tian's systems. He stepped through the doors to the O.R. and looked at the mess that lay before him. Some of the structure towards the rear of the room had been compromised and walls looked like they'd been torn away and skewn across the floor and wires and circuitry lay awkwardly on the horizontal display in the middle of the room. His first port of call was to sweep these to one side, which he did so with the sleeve of his torn uniform. The screen had a crack towards the far corner, but it still shone a brilliant blue upwards, signalling the system was waiting for instruction. Cautiously the recruit tapped away and the command prompt and typed the command he'd been made to memorise back at the academy, and took a deep breath waiting to see whether it worked, or if he had even remembered it correctly. He let out a sigh as the menu came up, and prompted him for his next command. Feeling his way into The Tian's system, he started with a basic status scan of the ship itself. The system reported that 68% of the hull had sustained damage, life support had been lost on the bottom 5 decks of the ship (out of a possible 17) and sheilds were completely offline. Gravity had been lost on deck 8 but life support was unaffected there. Ok, so now he was getting somewhere.

He ran the status scan on the ship, and then ran similar scans of every ship in the fleet. He used this data to compile a report, which he'd give to Head Command when he got back. Now just playing around with the system, he scanned the asteroid belt. He found that 28% of the asteroids were crystal-based, 61% were largely metal and 11% contained high concentrations of eonium. When they had the time, he noted a recommendation to come back and mine what resources they could from this asteroid field. He should have reported back to his original post in engineering 10 minutes ago, but he was getting into the swing of things in the O.R. He decided that he'd really test the system out to see if it was working, so he conducted a long-range scan of what was beyond the asteroid belt. The Tian's were the only sensors capable of breaking through the interference caused by the asteroids themselves. The scan didn't come back immediately, and the recruit began to get impatient. He was about to turn an leave the system working when it beeped to show it had finished, and the recruit looked at the results and saw something that concerned him deeply. His curious frown turned into a shocked gawp, and without waiting to confer with his captain, he sent the results of the scan directly to the bridge of The Impact.

The communications officer for The Impact announced the incoming transmition as coming directly from the Observations Room on The Tian. Still unphased, The Captain looked up slightly; the only indication he would give that he was listening. A little disjointed, the officer continued indignantly saying "We're receiving a long-range scan from The Tian. It was conducted by one of the newer members of the crew who stepped in as a replacement just 15 minutes ago"

"What does it say?" contributed the ensign who had flinched away from the exploding bulkhead earlier, almost as if to say 'Get on with it'.

"It's a little distorted, we've not got our communications back up to 100% yet... I'll just try and clear it up a bit." She said as she entered some commands into her system. "It's a little clearer. According to the scan, The Tian is picking up several hyperdrive signatures from the other side of the asteroid belt."

The Captain took his head off of his hand, suddenly alert "What do you mean, 'the other side'?"

"Just that. I'm trying to make sense of the scan; it appears to be a large fleet stationed in an attack position... I'm just trying to work out if their weapons systems are powered".

On his feet now, looking straight forward at the main viewer The Captain asked "Does the scan indicate who they are?"

"One moment... the scan says the weapons system are active, Sir. My god...." And the communications officer trailed off.

Turning to her, The Captain demanded "What is it?"

"It's.... it's Jenova, Sir."

The Navigation Officer turned round and said "Jenova are joining the war? Why?"

The Captain turned to him and said calmly "Obviously they saw how badly NewDawn were getting their behinds kicked, and fancied a bit of the action."

The crew fell silent, looking on at The Captain for some indication of what to do. He looked at the ground, ponderously. Everyone waited with baited breath, anxious to hear what The Captain had to say. But he didn't talk; he just rose his head to look straight forward at the viewer. He could sense that his officers were just about to burst in suspense, but he didn't speak.

He just stood there, looking forward; a familiar sly smile starting to appear in the corner of his mouth...
