Oh great internet, fountain of knowledge...
...where the hell can I buy a plain white linen or linen/cotton mix shirt ffs?
Seriously I've looked all over the place and no-one seems to have such a thing despite it being the middle of summer.
Enlighten me oh great ones.

Re: Oh great internet, fountain of knowledge...
Important note: cotton is not linen.
Linen is made from flax and is quite coarse, and also has larger holes between the weave. This makes it a cooler fabric than cotton so good for the summer. No-one seems to like it anymore though

I should add to anyone else who might chip in, I'm talking highstreet stores here as frankly you kinda need to try shirts on.

Re: Oh great internet, fountain of knowledge...
I can't chip in, but I can offer sympathy (or empathy, what's the difference?)
I volunteered for a waitering job at a fundraiser on the weekend, this requires a nice plain white cotton shirt. Now I didn't have one, so I went off to the shops to get one - simple I thought. Everybody sells white shirts! But did they? No they did not.
Blue shirts, green shirts (?), even shirts that I thought would look good on a clown ($120 on sale), but white shirts? **** no. I wasted 4 hours of my life in three different shopping centres looking for a plain white shirt. I am lead to believe they don't exist any more.

Ha! Ha! Ha!
I can buy good quality white cotton blend shirts for $20 US.
Hurray for exploitive capitalism where we import all of our shirts from Thailand and the like.

the word which I have subtely highlighted troubles me.
anyway ... meggles ... I don't find linen to be more cooling than cotton, it's far heavier and thicker. We had linnen before we had cotton and I'm pretty sure that cotton was a revolution.

Re: Oh great internet, fountain of knowledge...
you can walk into any supermarket in the country and get a white cotton shirt nowadays.
i havent seen any nice linen shirts around for ages though, and they are a bugger to iron
anecdotally, i find my linen trousers a lot cooler than cotton ones in hot weather

Tescos sell White shirts for about £3. I'd imagine you get what you pay for, but for a waiting job it's probably sufficient...

Re: Oh great internet, fountain of knowledge...
You could try Topman - £25
Or
Burtons - £20
Whats your budget? It makes it alot easier to find you a shirt.

Re: Oh great internet, fountain of knowledge...
The Supermarkets sell cotton shirts now do they? Oh what a quaint country you people live in.
In the end I found one that was largely white, but with an interesting diagonal weave that makes it look rather ace. White shirts are terribly versatile and I wanted a good quality one that I could wear with a suit etc. Dressing like a hobo was not the goal.

Re: Oh great internet, fountain of knowledge...
I'm looking at around the £20 mark. That Burton one looks worth a look plus they do student discount so that's £18 to yours truely.

I'm going to have to go with a recommendation for Primark, the leading clothes store for Britain's lower class.

Similarly the only plain white cotton shirts I own are from Dunnes Stores (which I imagine is somewhat equivalent to this "primark").
PS just noticed this thread is about linen shirts. Don't know if they're linen or not

Re: Oh great internet, fountain of knowledge...
Damnit I was in Nottingham a few hours ago and completely forgot we had a Slaters. I found the ones in Burton and M&S. Might go with Burton as I already have a few of their (cotton) shirts that I'm quite pleased with. I'll have a look in Slater first though.
Go go intarweb fashion gurus.
