This was always going to be a natural consequence of democratising Iraq. It will have to be dealt with.
Ali Sistani has stated that he does not want some kind of Iranian system imposed upon Iraq, but it's hard not to conclude that there will not be pressure in that direction from some people in time. Regardless, Iraq is not going to have a flawless western style liberal democracy for quite some time to come, and it would have been folly to think it would have been otherwise from the outset.
I've just noticed; 58% Is a pretty ****ing appaling turnout for an election of this nature. The turnout at the 2001 General Election was about that high, and that was an eighty year low for Britain.

For a country shattered by war and frightened by terrorism thats targetted specifically at voting sites and people, i would consider 58% to be pretty good...

Re: Iraqi Election Results.
One imagines that a large percentage of those who didn't turn out were sunni muslims many of who, as mentioned, boycotted the elections.

I'm not saying I don't understand the causes; I'm simply saying it's still awfully low, even given the expected intimidation and Sunni boycott.

Re: Iraqi Election Results.
it is low - hopefully everything turns out to be good, and those insurgents be supportive so the next elections :cross-fingers: will have a better turnout

Re: Iraqi Election Results.
Looking at the regional breakdown, the variance is massive. Above 90% in some areas, and <10% in others :|

Re: Iraqi Election Results.
I heard that the turnout was slightly higher than the Americans expected.
