Re: Sweepstakes on the pope
I'm not sure why people are giving him any more than twelve hours or so to live, since even official Vatican sources are saying on record that he's going to be dead by the morning.

What betting ? We've not risked anything, and don't gain anything. This is just a guessing game.

This is what I don't understand. I don't see why people cry about these things. When Diana died, everyone cried but I didn't know why. I was left thinking "Did you know her personally? DId she know you? Would you say you had an emotional connection with her that was similar to the one she had with you? Were you friends? Did you even meet? Did you even hold more than a 30 second conversation with her? No. So stop crying." If I wept half for everyone I'd held half a minutes paitence with after their death, people would call me loopy [probably the same people who cried for Diana]
And it's the same with the pope. In fifteen days, conclave will begin and oh, would you look at that, a new pope! Better than the last because this one can walk, talk, and even open his eyes!
When famous people die, they are replaced by other people.
No offence to your sister man, I'm sure she's cool, I just don't understand the whole "crying for dead famous people".

Re: Sweepstakes on the pope
I don't think you have to know someone personally to be affected by their death (or by tragedies generally). I remember one of my relatives crying when a documentary came on about toddlers with AIDS in Afirca or something. It's hardly wrong to have empathy for human beings, even ones you've never met. Hell, people cry over imaginary people in movies.
BUT I do agree with your point about dead famous people. The Diana thing was just collective insanity but more generally when people cry for something like this I suspect they are crying for a whole range of issues and that might just be the trigger or whatnot.

Right, that's it. I'm calling the Vatican and demanding the Pope dies within the next 12 hours. There's no way I'm getting beaten on this by Theam, ffs.

Re: Sweepstakes on the pope
Some Italian tabloid says he's already dead and they're lying to us. Someone call Dan Brown so he can make another badly written, poorly-characterised book about it.

That's slightly contradictory no?
The pope is dead ...
Love live the pope ...
Anyway, there's been no confirmed time of death yet, we must all wait until the time of death is official, but he IS dead.

Re: Sweepstakes on the pope
God doesn't want another catholic immigrant in heaven (the lutheran press is stirring things up) and the pope ain't dying to go into hell, so the lawyers have been called, well specifically Johnny Cochrane for the pope, he went ahead and is negotiating time in purgatory.
