It is only cost effective if you don't have a morgage and you have a lot of money coming in per month. I have to agree, however, that it saves you from having to do the post 3 year maintenance which, even with today's cars, is rather ridiculously expensive.
But unless you have the money for it, don't go into a lease, buy used, get a honda or some crap, they usually are ok. Stay away from the americans. Lesson learned hard way.
