But if you look at something like we were discussing in a a different thread just the other day about japan for-instance. It might be a stereotype that they are more reserved (at least in manners of expression that we assosiate with the term "reserved"), but it might also be right.
Yes stereotypes can lead to awful things but that doesn't mean that they have no basis of truth.
if you were reffering to rather more trivial stereotypes, then i'm pretty sure no-one (here at least) believes they hold much ground.

I have to disagree with you here. For example, a number of people have given the British stereotype, but when you break down Britain into smaller areas you find that the stereotype has no basis in reality. Stereotypes only make sense if you are ignorant of a particular culture.
