If it means a lot to him, then I guess leaving a girl he does not really love isn't really that bad.
There are a few things that I would not easily stop doing for someone I didn't love. Golf is not among them, but I still can understand that he would want to refuse such an ultimatum if it means as much to him as reading means to me, for instance.
