As a well-to-do member of the fearful scurrying middle class I find it important to hold close as a mantra that expressing sympathy or compassion for those I perceive as socially below me is a betrayal of every trinket and idol I seek to define myself by, and as such is analogous to blasphemy or treason, and a detestable act in itself - comparable only, perhaps, to actually beinga heroin addict, mentally deficient or god forbid very poor.
