It doesn't take long to get a general feel for what you like. In addition, whisky isn't as expensive a pursuit as you make out, especially when you can go to small specialist shops and get 100-250ml sample bottles for a few pounds. It's not like it generally gets drunk quickly either, so you wouldn't for example be able to do a cost comparison with something like a bottle of vodka.
