There's so much shit on McCain from the last 3-4 years that he won't be able to paint himself as a moderate Republican if a Democrat starts putting out some decent negative ads about his voting record in the Senate. Essentially he grandstands and then shuffles back in with the rest of the Republicans when it looks like its getting tight. He's got away with it for a long time, but those chickens will eventually come home to roost.
