City of god was set in Rio de Janeiro, which is not our capital, but a major city. I saw that and enjoyed very much! Not as much as Tropa de Elite ( Elite Squad, i guess) which shows the war on drugs on the police side.

what our poor are like
Some time ago our poor used to be in the fields, working the land for a living. During the Military government (1964-1984) Our country fell in the illusion that it was of the best interest of the nation to undergo a rapid industrialization/urbanization. At the time they thought it was the same, so they simply gave lots of incentives for industries and none to agriculture. The population flocked to major cities across the nation. The only (obvious) problem is that industries in the late 20th century were not the same as in the early 19th. So, differently of what happened in developed countries back then, industries had absolutely no need for waves and waves of people coming from the interior to supply a very limited internal demand and a even smaller exportation sector ( differently from japan, the asian tigers and china, brazil never, up to know, had a big concern with exporting goods). So people just hang around large cities. As Malcon X once said, sitting on a table doesnt make you a dinner, these people, now heavily target with ads, the obvious differences in income, wealth, power, started cooking their own dinner out of the hate and disgust by the oblivious treatment received.

That anger was the main political flagship of the workers party, and lula feast on that. The infamous Fome Zero project was the first populist attempt to suck political power out of poverty. It worked both ways: The workers party would appropriate illegally of some of the donations, and give the rest in exchange for votes.

Cidade de Deus was set in 2002, which is before lula coming into power. The war on drugs has been getting a lot worse lately, so people are starting to fall of this lifestile (living on drug money) to life off government money. Here is how it works:

Bolsa familia, (family subside) will give you 40 dollars for each children you send to school. IF you have no work, you get some 50 dollars. if you find a job, you lose all this, and when you are on minimum wage (around 150 dollars) it does not pay off. So people started quitting jobs to get this money. People continue to leave farms, where they had a so so life, eating what the land produced and selling surplus, to have a ****ed up life in big crowded cities. When they get there, they cant turn around, and they get ever more dependent on the government.

There is no objetives or goals to attain to keep on receiving bolsa familia. You dont have to look for a job, your kids dont have to get any grades, there is no stimulus to have a decent life at all!

Other dumb stuff this government does

Lula wants the Great Nation of Brazil to join the permanent council of UN. For that, brazil sold trillions of tons of soy, iron ore at below producing costs values to China, and even recognized it as a free market to get its vote. But of course they said NO, because before brasil joining in, Japan would have to, something China would never agree

On the annual report on the status of the nation, our president said that the food prices surge on brazil was due to 'people saving more money because they ride on ethanol instead of gasoline, so the demand on food was higher, causing food to cost more'. This is in stark contrast of reports of The economist (it was the in a cover of this magazine last year) and other respected research/report agencies that blame the rise of biofuels taking up space previously belonging to food plants, the increase of income in china, making them eating more meat, and climate change are causing crops to fail at a increased rate.
Jesus, you could simply read a newspaper to know that and yet...

Our governmet heard word that fisheries on Brazil are doing badly. Unaware that this is a global trend, due to the imminent collapse of sea life due to overfishing, our president decided to let fisheries know that the government will buy every fish they catch and pay more than the market does, and use it on daily rations given at schools.
Ignorance on ecology and the effects of a diet high on salt for infants is shown with spectacular flamboyancy.

Larry Rohter made an article on the fact that lula spends nearly 2.000 dollars a month on personal beverages ( specially whisky) and was seen tipsy in many public occasions and gets his passport suspended, and all of a sudden is under investigation from the federal police, nearly being expelled out of the country.

Petrobras made a contract with Bolivia about LPG pipelines that was good for some 20 years. Evo morales (a che guevara´s fan), the bolivian president, simply confiscates all the Government Enterprise´s assets, which total some 100,00 millions of dollars, and sets the prices to triple of the original deal. Our president, on behalf ofthe suffered people of bolivia, and in the name of international brotherhood simply accepts that withouth a peep, even while Evo calls Brazil the united states of south america, filthy imperialist excuse for a country. Lula says that there will be no shortages or increased prices for the gas, despite the fact that over 70% of our gas came from Bolivia. 7 Months later there is severe shortage of gas to petrol stations, and cars can no longer run on it, because every bit of gas was diverted to industries. 9 months later and we had the largest increase in cost of gas in history.

So thats a brief history of brazils last decade. Incompetence, ignorance, populism, blatant lies, scandals, an absolute desgrace
