Read some Tolstoy:
Anna Karenin or
War and Peace if you like long but rewarding reads,
The Cossacks is shorter and not as good, but still very worthwhile.
And read some Shakespeare (
King Lear - it really is some of the best literature ever written).
edit: Oh, and read Le Carré for pretty much the best spy-fiction you'll ever read.
