Yeah, that's pretty obvious. Cui bono and all that. Lenders love it too because student loan guarantees eliminate all that nasty paperwork involving evaluation of loan applicants and going after deadbeats.

By allowing students cheap credit the universities can charge higher fees.
Oh rapturous joy. The nation's prayers for higher university fees have been answered.

If students couldn't pay any money that would push the price down presumably, or universities would go out of business.
Falling prices and/or universities going out of business would force universities to compete even harder for students. Having attend and worked at a university I think more competition would be an excellent idea.

There is the notion as well that if students go on to earn more money they will pay higher income tax (unless they become accountants).
Not unlike the notion that we are all just sheep to be sheared.

But if we really want to maximize tax revenues still further for the glorious state we should severely limit the number of degrees in the social sciences--we all know there there aren't enough jobs in those fields.

Um, no. The scream was funny but what really killed Dean's campaign was his distant third-place finish in the Iowa caucuses. Dean's "strike early and hard" campaign strategy required him to do well in Iowa, and after weeks of being at or near the top of the polls there was a lot of expectation that he would win, or at least finish a strong second. Finishing a weak third pretty much popped his balloon.
