I really do love the "they'll all be bad people now anyway" argument.

"John Smith has just been cleared of murder on appeal, and it turns out he's been wrongly imprisoned for the past 30 years. However, being wrongly imprisoned has probably made him angry with the world, and so if we let him out he'll probably go and do something naughty, so we'd better keep him locked up forever."
