Without wishing to sound nihilistic, so what? The vast majority of people who get shit faced in their youth still seem to be able to pass exames, get jobs, raise families, etc. Sure, perhaps they would have got ever so slightly higher in some exam if they didn't drink alcohol, but then again, they might not.
