thud is easily one of the best discworld, or even best works by pratchett ever, it just not like the rest of the series

lately i have been reading:

grunts by mary gentle, comic fantasy by the author of ash: a secret history, both of which are excellent books.
huge amounts of random pulp crap from orbit, who seem to have cornered the market in random vampire-with-sexual-overtones books (read laurell k hamilton for perhaps the best of the genre)

and a history of violence, which has made me want to see the film even more
