Did you see any of the 3 programs on BBC2 about "The Power of Nightmares" or something - about neo-conservatism and Islamists. Was v. interesting and about pretty much what you put above. Was also saying the term al-Qaeda was first coined by America in so they could make out bin Laden was head of a massive terror network and could thus try him for the Nairobi (? - may have been 1st WTC one)) bombings. No such massive network existed and that's why they couldn't find al-Qaeda cells in Afghanistan - but there could have been.
