If you wanted to combine agendas and make some enviornanimalist argument then youd have to consider the ratio of energy used to extract food to the energy produced in consumption. The perentage of the sun's energy involved is totally irrelevant regardless of the angle youre looking at things from, because the sun's energy is essentially infinite.
As dante says it's about resource usage. Currently it's still very practical because all those Africans are starving anyways. While I'm sure we all find environmentalism funny if nobody ever gave a thought to ensuring we have some renewable resources we'd probably be living in a pretty shit world right about now.
