Before you make any decisions, bear in mind that PETA are a hypocritical, insane (I really have no other words for it) organisation. Furthermore, the "cow only gets a certain percentage of the plant, why not eat the plant!" arguments are disingenious at best, because a significant amount of the plant's energy reserves are locked up in chemical structures that humans cannot digest.

Oh, and in terms of environmental impact and general health, the market for fruit and vegetables for human consumption has if anything been more damaging to the environment than that of meat, due to the high use of various chemical produce and the abandonment of the nitrogen fixing cycles of yore. Then there's the tendency to create enormous monocultures (see: bananas) and the fact that so-called "organic" food has gone too far the other way, in many cases being worse for the consumer than the chemicallyed nonsense.
