The issue isn't energy loss, it's that a meat-rich diet takes a lot more water / land / other resources to produce the same end result. I don't see a vegan diet as the way forward (as stated, you end up having to take supplements to stay healthy anyway) but we could probably all cut down on the amount of meat we consume. I suspect McDonalds being removed from existence would be good for everyone in the long run.
If you're seriously considering not eating meat because of something you read about happening to chickens then just go kill yourself right now, the galaxy doesn't need someone like you in in it.
