Speaking as someone who's played Diablo and Diablo 2 a fair amount, in most games there's more variety. The first time through, most people will be playing for the plot, which is ok if rather sparse. The second time through, people will play for things they missed, because there was some variety in the gameplay which was pleasing.

In Diablo 2, there's no variety in the gamplay. People will have not missed things. It's all the same.
