Reasoning with the bf is most likely a dead end, which does not leave you with alot of legal possibilities in terms of direct intervention.

There is no question that the bf deserves a serious beating and more, hitting girls is despicable, but you have to ask yourself how far you are ready to go, as using force could backfire onto you. You have already done alot by phoning the police, not everyone would!
If you decide to get physical, you have to scare him, really terrify him, or he will take it out on the girl and could seriously hurt her.
