Self-improvement is
and in all seriousness people should try to identify ways they and others can better themselves. But there's a cultural reluctance which exists in some to making value judgements "against" other people's lives/ifestyles. This probably originated from a quite just opposition to the control exerted by the major religions and the strict codes that accompanied them, but it's not clear whether this reluctance is still always justified.
Anyway we're all too cool for any of that nonsense and besides, who'd want to take advice from a drug addict / Dutch man / bed-wetter / alcoholic / gym freak / fan of the books of Ayn Rand etc, etc?
