It is in the best interests of the animal rights activists to let it be built in England, which has some of the strictest laws on this in the world, than let it be built somewhere else.
Oh, and I don't see people protesting work done on drosophila, so at some point the argument appears to come down to "BUT THEY'RE CUTE!".
