there's a clear difference between a film that can be appreciated for it's influence and merits (of it's own time) to actually having stood the test of time to hold its own ground right now in any sense bar it's influential and then-innovative nature.

as far as oliver stone's credentials as a director, i suspect he gets a lot of of his love purely for platoon and perhaps scarface. has noone realised he's also directed natural born killers, alexander, world trade center, jfk, born on the 4th of july, u-turn and god knows what else that's not much short of painful to watch
