The ecological argument is in my opinion the only reason for vegetarianism that has any intrinsic value.

You live and learn, although im unconvinced by the argument that vegetarianism is the solution to everything, even the wiki article points out what rice farming does. Living on only 'organic/free range/rain fed/sun kissed' plants paints the picture of a pretty dire sovietesque society where yearly harvests mean a great deal. Im not sure how we're meant to be saved and globally fed when the surplusses produced by capitalist intensivism is taken away. Even then theres still a trade off, you may reduce intensive farming but the acreage of land used will increase - and that will have its own negative impact.
